35. Being the Outer Nesting Doll and the Adventure of Supervising (ft. Kate Walker, Ph.D., LPC-S, LMFT-S)

from Therapy Tea: Demystifying the Mental Health Profession · host Jazmin Crookes, LPC and Karen Jennett, LPC

This week Jazmin wants to normalize the “summer slump”. It’s a real challenge for lots of mental health professionals in private and group practice and it’s not about you! Seasonal impacts are a little-discussed reality of this profession, particularly when you’re working outside of an agency or treatment center setting. Our recommendation, don’t take it personally, don't make big changes to how you do things during this time of year, and definitely don't Give a Mouse a Cookie!Check out The Couch Next Door podcast! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2285228/about We love Candice Fraser and you will too! Connect with Candice on Instagram @candicefraserlpcThis week we are sharing our conversation with Kate Walker who is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Music from UT Austin, a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Sam Houston State University. Kate has been a private practice owner for years, but is currently dialing back her direct client work as she transitions more fully into her work as a counselor educator, providing training to supervisors in Texas as well as supporting other clinicians in their business building. With Dr. Kate we talk about how ridiculous it is to believe the lies about not being entitled to make a decent living in this profession. How many times have you felt like you’re *supposed* to be a poor martyr for the cause? Kate’s here to bust that nonsense myth with us and we are so grateful for her voice and passion in encouraging mental health professionals to stand up for their expertise and worth.Listen to our conversation with Kate on her podcast (Episode #137 Behind the Mic: Raw Truths of Therapy Podcasting with the Hosts of Therapy Tea Podcast) here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2026902/episodes/17282586 Resources mentioned: The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field by Mike MichalowiczYou Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen SinceroThe 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Timothy FerrissMy Next Steps: Create a Counseling Career You'll Love by Kate M.
