36. Medical Crimes: Shawn Adams & Hsiu-Ying ("Lisa") Tseng
from Pink Collar: A True Crime Podcast · host Pink Collar Pod
We hope you are staying warm this week! If you aren't, here are some good true crime stories to listen to while you bundle up by the fire. This week we cover cases involving medical crimes. Rachel tells the story of Shawn Adams, an owner of a consignment store in Waterloo, Indiana. Shawn befriended an antique store owner, Terry Roeder, and her husband, David. Shawn was struggling with a diagnosis of brain wrist cancer and desperately needed some money to help pay for medications and other expenses. Terry was a kind-hearted individual who was willing to help Shawn in her time of need. When Shawn asked for more and more money, Terry and David began to have doubts about Shawn's illness. Nathalie tells us the story of Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng, the first doctor in the United States to be convicted of murder for prescribing deadly amounts of pain medication. When opioids started to be widely prescribed by doctors, we did not have enough information about the addictive properties of these medications. Doctors did not intentionally prescribe these medications intending to harm their patients. Dr. Tseng cannot be included in this category of providers. She continued to overprescribe opioids to her patients even when she was made aware that a few of her patients had overdosed and died. In many cases, she did not perform the physical exams necessary to prescribe these medications and essentially ran a "pill mill" out of her office. We use this case as an opportunity to discuss addiction and needed reforms in the field of pain management.
