#36: Relationships and money

In general, people don't know how to talk about money. Add feelings and relationships to the mix and you have a lot of room for awkwardness. Your future financial security will be heavily influenced by the financial behaviour of your partner. You owe it to yourself to ensure that you know exactly what you're in for. When I was younger I got heavily indebted. This was bad. I did, however, learn a number of important life lessons from that experience. One unexpected upside is that debt forced me to talk about money to my partner. Our openness about money is something we've come to take for granted. As I've become more open about my own finances, my friends have been talking to me about theirs. I'm often surprised that couples who are so comfortable sharing every other aspect of their lives struggle to have basic financial conversations. In this episode, Simon and I try to figure out the best way to start talking about money with your partner. It doesn't take us very long to become tangled up in the complexities of love and money.
