#37. Shawn Anderson: Imagining a new financial architecture in a post-Covid-19 Crisis world.

from The Economics of Well-Being · host Mark Anielski

#37. March 30, 2020. Canadian financial data scientist Shawn Anderson joins me to do to discuss his ideas of a new financial architecture in a post-Covid-19 economy. Shawn Anderson is a self-described ‘Yogi hacker and financial data scientist’. He is a young Canadian entrepreneur with a background in computing science, AI engineering, and big data. For over 7 years he has been studying and applying AI algorithms in industry and academia. Shawn was fortunate to begin his career by studying under Dr. Richard Sutton, now distinguished professor with Google’s Deepmind, at The University of Alberta, and is now extremely excited about the applications of AI algorithms to the domain of financial science and engineering, a field still in the early stages of its infancy, but essential for the stability of human society as it becomes globally inter-connected across the planet. For this reason, he has founded the BC-based FinTech startup, Longtail Financial, a research firm investigating the application of emerging software technologies to the domain of finance. LTF has been making a name for itself in the blockchain world as it is providing tokenomics engineering for ambitious crypto-projects such as the Ubuntu Coin Foundation, an African-based organization that is aiming to provide essential financial services across Africa. Shawn is a passionate advocate for embracing decentralized financial systems such as Bitcoin and Ethereum as useful tools for communities and individuals that are looking to diversify their portfolios with non-correlated assets. Additionally, he endorses these protocols as serving incredibly valuable functions in their ability to transmit money quickly and cheaply around the globe, and issue programmable money, known as smart contracts. Shawn proposes decentralized systems as more efficient alternatives to traditional finance, which allows for cheaper goods and services for consumers, and higher profit margins for value producers. Shawn takes this passion a step further by proposing that decentralized systems offer key solutions to catalyze sustainable development, open knowledge sharing, and enable governance systems that we will need for the challenges we currently face as a global community.
