38 | Five Ways to Make Yourself Unhappy

from Burnout to Thriving · host Cecilia Mannella

After a brief hiatus due to some technical issues, we are back and super excited to dive into today's topic. In this episode, we are flipping the script and discussing the top five ways to make yourself unhappy. While it may sound counterintuitive, understanding these pitfalls can provide valuable insights into how to lead a more fulfilling life. 5. Chasing Happiness We often hear about the pursuit of happiness, but ironically, chasing happiness can lead to unhappiness. Happiness is an emotion that peaks and then subsides. It's not a constant state we can achieve and maintain. By constantly seeking happiness, we set ourselves up for disappointment because we treat it as something external and permanent, which it is not. 4. People-pleasing People-pleasing involves prioritizing others' needs and expectations over our own. This behavior stems from a belief that others' happiness and success are more important than our own. It leads to burnout and unfulfillment because we can't control others' happiness, and we end up neglecting our own needs. 3. Choosing Comfort and Safety Over Growth While comfort and safety are appealing, they can stifle growth. Growth requires stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing new experiences. When we choose comfort over growth, our lives become predictable and stagnant, limiting our opportunities for happiness. 2. Chasing the Status Quo Societal expectations often dictate our life choices, from career paths to lifestyle decisions. When we follow these norms without questioning them, we may end up living a life that doesn't align with our true passions and values. Understanding and prioritizing our own values and passions is crucial for genuine happiness. 1. Hidden Expectations Hidden expectations are unspoken and often unconscious demands we place on ourselves and others. These expectations can lead to disappointment, resentment, and a host of negative emotions. By recognizing and expressing these expectations, we can alleviate much of the friction and unhappiness they cause. In this episode, I aimed to provide a different perspective on happiness by highlighting behaviors and mindsets that lead to unhappiness. By addressing these five areas—chasing happiness, people-pleasing, choosing comfort over growth, chasing the status quo, and harboring hidden expectations—we can move towards a more fulfilling and happy life.
