Ten-year-old Shahinaaz had been brutally stabbed 38 times and set on fire with kerosene, while her three-year-old sister, Hadeer, survived smoke inhalation. The crime also involved the theft of 3,000 Egyptian pounds. Investigators eventually focused on Afaf, the wife of the victim’s stepfather’s brother, who lived on the same floor and had a secret criminal past as a professional thief. Afaf confessed to murdering Shahinaaz after the girl refused to stay silent about her presence in the apartment.
