Al op de basisschool voelde Joel zich niet begrepen, maar hij begreep ook zijn eigen brein niet. Hij werd regelmatig aangesproken op zijn houding, hij moest "beter zijn best doen", terwijl niemand zag dat hij dat juist deed. Dat hij een conceptuele denker is, wist hij (en zijn omgeving) niet. School werd een grote stressfactor en was één van de redenen waarom hij later drugs en alcohol ging gebruiken. Een prettig bij-effect was dat ook de chaos in zijn hoofd minder werd. Nu heeft hij daar andere wegen voor gevonden.
