#39 - The Return of Jesus Will Be Like a Royal Parade, Not a Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
from Adventures in Theology · host Brayden Brookshier
I cannot tell you how many times I encounter people talking about "the rapture." It is so engrained in some Christian's minds, but is that what the message of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 really is about? Furthermore, is that really what we are hoping for when we anticipate the return of Christ? I don't think so. Listen in as we go verse by verse through this passage as we remember what the hope of the second coming entails! Also, (while not discussed in the episode) I think it is important to note that "rapture theology" only came into existence in the 1800's. No one believed this in church history prior. For a quick video on the history of rapture theology, check out this 5-minute YouTube video from Dr. Ben Witherington: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_cVXdr8mVs&t=133s Here is a summary of the three key things we wrap up with at the end. According to 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, the return of Jesus will encompass: The Return of Christ to forever reign in a new world with His people; The Resurrection of the body and all of creation; The Reunion of believers in Jesus, dead and alive.
