It's a daily talk show episode 392 and here it's weekend banter what's happening guys? What's going on? We got good a Derek is in the building dirty days dirty days, but how are you mate? Hey guys?
I'm fantastic mate You're turning into a puppy dog. What does that mean? Like look at him just the hair and the beard I don't know a bit shaggy. No, no, no a Schnauzer Schnauzer Schnauzer my mates Schnauzer and epilepsy Oh my little fucker.
Just it sounds like a kind of a gun that a Nazi would you know that Schnauzer Schnauzer is it is like a small Edo, well, I don't know I should have asked. They're just a little dog. The thing is I've got like these little yeah Yeah, I tell you I'm the chum dog. It's my dog.
No, it's my dog. Do you have a bit of Schnauzer? Yeah Oh, we got a Schnauzer expert. Do you think he kind of looks a bit like Schnauzer?
Yeah, it's getting there work out Welcome to waiting weekend banter three Okay, welcome Desmond. It's a pleasure to have you here tonight, mate. Absolutely stoked to be here Not just to be here on your show, but especially the weekend banter one of the early how many guests This is the you'll be our fifth second. This is the second it's Gemma Pete Brie.
Amy you And that's pretty good. That's pretty good. I mean you were listening early on to the daily talk show I go through my Instagram and there is footage of you talking to the camera while on Punk Road Oh, that's right. Yeah, and that was I reckon that was before I'd even actually met you I mean, that's not to say much because you haven't met a heap of people that we speak with throughout podcast like What's his name?
I've been Sydney Trev Trev. We've never met Trev. Yeah, not in not in IRL never met in real life We're thinking about sending up three-day deal with a stage he's blessed. We know what happens to wives that What was your first episode that you listen to of our show?
Oh, it's a really tricky one because I'm you know I'm a little bit older than you guys only touch but I don't remember shit But squeegee thing, I don't remember that one Of course I was referred to yeah, it was referring to as episode 14 should you wish to look into our cars Well, I had a meeting with someone the other day who was keen to come on the show and then I said, oh, how did you sort of whatever So did you start listening never ask that question? Do you say never ask that question never ask that question because they said they're like, ah, you know I haven't had a chance yet to get into it, which begs the question if you're going to ask to be on someone's podcast Is it etiquette that you'll at least I can listen to one? Yeah, if you ask this if you ask them to come on I don't know that any obligation to see through you drivel. No, no, no, you've done before however If they say can I come on then most absolutely most definitely you don't do a little bit of homework and find out at least Their format of the structure in your Twitter.
Have you had anyone that's because you've got a few podcasts hang on to your hat? Yeah, it is like I mean you're playing in a specific area, which is fatherhood and dads It's anyone can be interested in it. Have you had anyone been like I'm a dad. Can I be on your show where you tell me?
Asking for guests is a really big a big step in having a podcast that has guests. Yeah, it's huge It's hard to do the confidence kind of is exponential what's stopping you though because you can at first you go Oh, I don't want to I don't use them up too soon. Yeah, because and they're gonna say no because they're gonna have any episodes I three and so as it goes on the confidence is it it's exponential. Yeah, it goes up and up I would say my observation is podcasting is easy to get guests on and most things Yeah, I think people still see this sort of glossiness to podcasting like I've seen people on other people's podcast and I've thought But it's like but then I'm like, okay, it's about the format like I think we've had a bunch of people with it was their first podcast Yeah, and so it's yeah, not everyone is being on one I think it's a place where you get to sort of explore someone's life and thinking and people like that And there's no there's absence of that terror of what you say is done is is out there forever.
Mm-hmm. Okay. That's not absent today But people are a lot more likely to say yeah, all right, I'll give it a go Especially when you do the I do you guys don't but I do the thing where I go look if you suddenly go on a rant about your ex Life and then realize it's gonna lose you a hundred grand. Yeah, then it's fine.
I'll whip it out I've dropped an episode entire episode. Why? It was a someone someone just went and checked their Their employment contract they're in public the public sector and it was you know a bit a bit on the Israel file out It wasn't hate that it was it was referencing as we always do sooner or later drug use I mean, so therefore it was like I'm a bit uneasy about that and I said I can chop it all out and in the end I went you know what they're about come back in a great chat. Let's not come up.
Let's go have another chat cover the topics We were covering anyway, and don't sweat. It's like having our own thing that we can do it We're not gonna get fired anywhere with a noun We also have mr. 97 joining us at the table as well if you're listening to the audience I'm sure now's our expert is in mr. 97.
I was walking in here today So I walk from probably about 5k what you didn't just I thought you meant you walked into the office So I took body to the to the dirt jump park and had him hitting some hills loved it But then I was on chapel straight and I'm just gonna drop me in at the studio But then she I was like I just take him home because he closed it up and I'll just walk down chapel straight beautiful couple of things I was walking next to this woman with a dog the dog was getting a lot of attention. It was a Chachao what a dog chat blue tongue. I think dog chat's blue and podcast chat on a set of days Yeah, I reckon we just stick here in the podcast chat. What about food chat Josh?
Food chat's probably more relevant for you guys Dispointed No, we were in the sub of 17. That's it. That's not which includes chorizo It was a blue to the dog had a blue tongue. Yeah, Chachao's have blue tongues They look like mini t-biz.
They're walking they're like a Japanese dog or some kind of some Asian breed and they're fucking expensive thousands and thousands and thousands Three grand for a good one. Yeah, three or five. Yeah, blue tongues. We either.
Yeah, they're fucking weird looking things anyway. I was thinking Everyone's got their price How much do you think this woman would have to be paid for her dog right this minute? What would you what? We give you dog like this?
No, because they become they become part of the family, so like I wouldn't I wouldn't give my dog up for like a billion dollars No, you have to have once you have a dog you realize I've had a dog. Yeah, it died But miss and I say let's just flush this out flush it out flush it out flush it out and then flush it Upside think about it. Yeah, you've got this a billion dollars. That was your number that you said you did Yeah, I mean these games are silly though This is fat, but it always goes into because Bree asked me like I'm about sucking someone off and how much I would and Apparently by say under half a meal I knew it Let's say you should now say you know some kind of casino tycoon has got a billion dollars because he loves you puppy And he wants it.
Yeah, but think about think about that like the money think about what you could do with it Think about how much you could help the world even if you said I'm gonna donate 90% of this you still got a hundred million dollars It's we're working with them pretty round Question for you Tom did this example is this for the Chow Chow person or anyone well I just saw it and I was like I think imagine I think everyone's got that Yeah, but it's not a Chow they're gonna they're probably a million dollars doesn't might not mean as much as someone with a radio You know, I mean I mean the Chow Chow is better looking than each now though. No offense It's not a problem. You can any problems. No she's sweet any any kind of Issues that doesn't like any kind of food.
No, she's everything. No one who doesn't get rid of this you had to dream dog You probably would be a price. Yeah, but you don't it because it seems so silly. Yeah But I mean, I guess I guess it'd be comparable the giving way boat.
No, it's not I cannot sell my son. You're legally let us I've got yeah, what do you got? I got two guppies. What's it got me?
It's a very small fish I like the idea of fish the problem with fish is the changing of the water filters I mean I thought of another fun game. It's a really not a similar to the dry ice You need a license could I get away with having a fish without a filter? Okay? I'll tell you how you do this you get to see see snails that it just gets nails for the for the tank and they clean the tank Is this true?
Well, I hadn't I had fish. I didn't have fighting fish. Did you ever say you know? No, he's a tropical which means you have to have the warmer stick and the filter in all the business You definitely found on the side of the road.
No, it's close. I bought it off for her my daughter's birthday, but save me It is actually I didn't know that I didn't know that I didn't know that either I thought you meant that's a bit like a clovers pitch up. Yeah. Yeah, he left wing mirror sitting Hang on you've got Thomas and clover.
That's right. That's right. I got one weird name one Oh, how do you land on Thomas and then clover? I like I think clovers more creative and beautiful than Thomas They could be a celebrity clover is gonna be at what's that festival that everyone goes to?
Coachella Every second generation of my family in the males have been called Tom Okay, for for longer than anyone knows Thomas legal and every other generation is called William And it's flipped over like that So my dad's called Tom and his grandfather was called Tom and his grandfather was called Tom And the other ones I was meant my brother was meant to call William But they just it was the 60s and they called him Russell And so that was always good. I just said look that's that's how we're gonna roll yeah Call with that if you only goes you know, it's all right, but then now Tom has to take that down if he chooses to have children Doesn't have to do it actually tell us clover. How'd you get to that man? And you think about names with girl names when she was bringing with Tom because it was like that Don't tell us the gender thing.
I told you that sorry for When I they do the scam thing and you go do you want to know the gender and you go and feel no I said well, I do but you got no rights like I go I want to know I mean I want to know I like surprises I just want to know I don't want to get bundles of girl clothes giving you stuff preparing to get rid of them again Yeah We went off Did you say that? No, I didn't pour it. They must have poured some shit I'm gonna burn out of blue smoke everywhere But the car went on fire Gender reveals for whatever reason do go horribly wrong something happens similarly in California where a huge forest fire Due to it's going to because they were doing for pyrotechics and stuff. Anyway, so you did you get to see you find out?
Well, I what happened was this the person did the scan who obviously saw the dick Well, so to your family this is the Thomas they don't know that they what they say it's like are can be 70% Sure, anyway, I so we went to leave the area and there's the the airlock door that you can't get into without pressing a button Sort of thing in the hospital scanning place and you just saw a solo it I was walking in front and I push the door open and she walked through and then I pulled it close lock her out Right and ran back in and caught up with the the they probably thought I was a weirdo I wasn't you know and I ran back into the scanning person who was just going back to their tea room, you know between doing scans having an Excuse me, what's the um, what's the gender I want to know the gender right and the person looked at me Like behind on a horror movie when they go and they go they're looking at someone and they look kind of open their gaze a bit more Like with fear. Yeah. Yeah, what's the behind me and I went and I looked around for your understanding, right? She got back in and we found out so we were in that that leads us back close to that other loop So I was sitting around in the bar that I just bought and we tried to decide that what to call the bar Well, you bought a bar It was called willow so that which is the punchline.
So thanks. So we Happened so we didn't have to say the punchline So is the punchline gonna be and we called it What's the bar called? I've already forgotten? And I really loved the name willow for a baby girl.
Yeah, it's beautiful. I love it I've known a couple of nice willows over the years as a name the bar Well, it's the point so we say so we take the bar and I'm my head's just we're supposed to be working at names the bar But my head's just trying to go over names of girls. I went. I really like willow as a name What do you think guys?
Hmm? I go yeah, that's perfect, but unless I was like it ended up being the bar name I see you call the bar below my partners went yet done. I love it willow willow sounds like you should have a sister name Clover they feel like they're in the sort of same round as well as guy But what you're saying is you call the bar willow instead of your daughter both of them are noxious weeds in Australia obnoxious Willow noxious and noxious and how do you spell it in noxious? Yeah, noxious.
Yeah, noxious. Thank you please look at the word noxious Yeah, noxious. We're opposite to What's that one that gets all over the hills and everything bamboozers curse bamboo? Yeah, it's like that willow trees they planted them they grow long river banks beautiful and they sort of Fuck up the waterway do that.
Yeah, they suck all the water you can pull off the sort of long sort of They look like cords and you can just whip they're also They don't belong here and clover similar to be find out I'm not so sorry. Yeah, so noxious is an adjective meaning harmful poisonous are very unpleasant and And on the willow trees it is illegal to sell or plant willows in Australia with the exception of the Alex battle a conia weeping willow And some species of pussy willow. Oh, yeah, we need it Isn't it funny is these trees? They used to be called black boys and now I think it's pretty I don't think people call them native grass tree Okay, but they get stolen so they're like a native to the coastline.
They're beautiful They're all through the grampians everywhere really they kind of look like they're like a black stem Like they're and then just like a little yeah, expensive as fuck. I remember next door neighbors It's a weird thing when you like when we moved house when I was a kid and we went to a posh neighborhood It's funny what people obsess over it's like expensive plants like they'll say we had a palm tree now back Yeah, and that was sort of our flex But for the next door neighbors. They had we call them black boys I don't know as native grass trees native grass trees and they had and that would be like if three grand a pop So three So you get a palm tree. Yeah, this is this is a real thing as well I actually do it inadvertently so someone you hear a rumor of how much a new shopping center spent to get a palm tree from Queensland What I like is here in my street was a old seafood restaurant that got done for salmonella or some kind of food You know they fucked up and they got closed down But then it was a vacant lot for years But there was these palm trees in front and then these builders bought the site and developed it up And they had to leave and a lot of a lot of buildings that go up in this instance trees They have to like make sure that they don't fucking kill the plant because it's a part of the development These guys killed the front being palm tree Like it's a $15,000 tree probably more and so probably more that more than fine They had to they had to replace it and so and just one story on the palm trees in Brighton There's this huge fuck off house and some of the things that I love bragging about my dad like I love You know, you know, you dad's done something great and you just love telling people My dad was known as the master of the lights the drag racers Richard Jenson the master at the lights.
He would always play that one VHS I think it was only once that it was it to the front You know, so if you've ever gone in Melbourne to the Brighton Beach Boxes, which is these little huts on the sand They were seven hundred grand. They're fucking ridiculous. It's almost like a donation to the city The local council the government owns them or the council on some so I thought they're private privately No, no, so then but it was a whole reason we started them, right? He would have started them So it's not like someone just claimed it.
Yeah, yeah I would have dropped out long leases Should they allow people to build because I saw you getting very bogged down in a conversation with your mum yesterday I don't what I think it was your mum on the phone because you were flexing about when to think yeah They own the building and that's like oh yeah, well, maybe it was a lot now Well, maybe it's a least but it's a fucking long lease. They've got the interesting that because I got it was about a guy who owns a Cafe that is huge within a big building where it's like a it's almost like a little mall and it's like I'll say I'll say that they the guys own the cafe and mum said no but blah blah owns the building I was like, yeah, but they own the cafe and I was like they own a building inside of another building that's owned by somebody else Which is a weird concept, right? Because it's not a free stand really own the business which then owns the lease So I think TJ's point was that he was told by the guy that they own the building they own the freehold or whatever So it's not a lease, which is the difference right? It's a freehold freehold is when you own the building Comes from like I learned it when I was working in pubs in England So if it's a freehold pub it meant the guy wrote the guy who owned the pub business who ran it He owned the building mmm freehold and that's like is that like 99 because I think in like the Philippines for instance Yeah, you only owned something for 99 years like villains.
You can buy in barley Yeah, but you're basically buying a fuckload a really long lease anyway, and we digress the palm trees that are situated on The what's it called? Right? No, it's right road. Yeah, it's this big house that just sold for about 10 million bucks and huge Ten the part trees that line this building.
There's probably five or six of them huge now They're like 10 15 minutes tall massive massive dad put them in with a bunch of people and he said that the way they got them Was they flew over a plantation and picked them out and then they had them brought down from Queensland to Melbourne It's crazy. I mean that shows an example of like sales tactics because they really didn't need to fly over I thought you were gonna say they flew them in in and they were sort of like I just imagine helicopters and going in Yeah, sort of you fly over a plantation. I mean you could do that with real estate You can say do a helicopter ride or charter and say we'll show you get to pick just the ones that are for sale Yeah, pretty deal Well, can you open your the live stream on your phone and just see what people are saying? And if there is anything feel free to jump in with any and before that.
How about we throw to your mum Derek? Can you explain this? Okay? Well, what happened was I was just the other day when I was editing hang on to your hat My show that I do at Castaway Studios at 7e Street I get ready for the big one later on.
I love any business where you've got a safety address. I've never had a business where you get the address again You're right. Do you know that even important? No, it's a seven easy street corner.
Right. It sounds like, you know, um, what's the hello? Hello, it's Doctor. Are you Chris and Mary's plan for mainstream street emerald and seven days and they work out for the two two at the front?
No, because you're not fashion now because you just need to know the name and then you're gonna look it up in here Yeah, but at seven easy. Yeah, seven easy street. It's good. And so you're eating your podcast I wasn't This morning I Had to go and The small plug was a made-up story Just do a plug for the next 30 seconds out of the way, so I don't want to hear any more made-up stories What are you what are you off at just quickly?
We are just launching It's holding up flyers. That's why studios is an accessible professional Podcasting studio in the heart the creative heart of common where I Teach help people beginners right through the corporate podcast and edit produce and open my studio to all kinds of fun And it is amazing. I've had some most amazing shit. I've learned recording people shows.
Well, you've recorded Michelle Laurie's podcast You've there's a lot that you do. Yeah, and we had the loose units guy. Oh, that's right guys in yesterday doing that I don't record them. They record they just use the studio, but it's and that's a great thing You know that they can just come in.
They can they've got a great road on this class which teaches you I do a class. What's the class? What's the cost of the class and how to build $120 and I run it on the third Saturday every month And it's no more than four people in the class and that gets it gets people familiar with all the equipment and how to basically how to run the studio themselves And it also runs down like drop as many tips as possible into sort of planning a show and your workflow to make it possible and that and that wasn't made up All of that. That's the real life.
It reminds me of I remember working on three thing Jules and Jets now We're determined to have someone from Jets now on phone really that's always the worst banter because they're like oh, what's a deal to Oh, hey guys, we've got great deals from Canberra to Melbourne at the moment. It's like, oh, thanks John. Bye guys. I've done that It's it's a special one succulents.
We did it with a guy who had a jewelry shop shipping showcase Jules and he's just love getting on there He's still there. I drive through a ship and heard them. We're still doing it. Anyway, back to your mum Yes, sorry that I feel guilty now because I asked my mum about myself and how life is because what I did I had to go to my mum's in hospital, right?
So she's got some kind of problem with her circulation of her legs and infection. So she's in hospital She's okay, right and the old man's at home. And so I had to go and do a round trip out to moral bark to visit the old man Make sure he's all right, but the coping all right, you know, looking after the dog and all that I Visited the old man and then I thought I did feel guilty because I was like, oh, I'm just dropping in just for a few minutes because I'm gonna be on the radio He's all right. I said anything I want to say to the young folk out there.
They got hundreds of thousands of listeners are all young Yeah, why doesn't miss an ice oven laughing? Yeah, yeah, they're not young I'm guessing right. I saw you graph the other day. I decided what That was awesome.
So and I said say something and I took a video And he said something he's got a message for you a lot not yet. I'm loading it out because you'll take five minutes again And then I thought I'll go and see mum in the hospital same thing mum But I've got a couple of minutes because I'm on the radio and the same old patter Yeah, so if you've got anything to say and this is where you get an idea of where I'm coming from Because she's gone. Oh, no, I know it's like I couldn't work out the audio. So I just put the video on yeah great and she and she's um Gone she's gone straight from oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no to this.
Okay, here we go. So you're just pulling out your iPhone now It's the iPhone red one All right, none of you got a message for all the wrongs out there Oh, well that are just so lovely and they make me so happy because I'm involved with them in theater and local theater And they're all young and they include me and I'm so glad of that and the stuff that I know that can help them with But there's a huge enthusiasm and youth and vigor that they've got which I don't have and so between us we get there But they're really lovely and I mean I haven't forgotten that I used to be one Did I what do you call them? Grogs I don't understand the words but I do remember being young and it was good really good So what do you reckon they should do to get the most out of their existence? They should um become involved Something attracts them and they're attracted to it and they've got something of themselves that connect with Something an organization or a club or something get connected with it and and learn and go with it Join get into the world.
Just be a part of it That's the only thing I know is to get involved people people are lovely I'm in hospital and there's three other ladies in the ward and I didn't know them when I came in but we've been talking and it's it's connecting It's important. I think I don't know Thank you. That is so good. There you go.
Grogs. There's a there's a life lesson It's the ultimate endorsement for joining the Grogs. Yeah. Yeah, I didn't explain Grog very well to it No, no, she thought I'm in all young.
No, but that's a perfect thing because you just just replace. Yeah, just young people at Grogs You did a reply to the old man's one. This is going to quit me. Yeah Here you go.
Keep your head down and don't get caught There's a difference between my beer and the cute dog there Is any way what's happening over here? Yeah, there's a few people We didn't say that after the number. Yeah And you don't have to sound like it as well. Do you ask if anyone said anything?
Yeah, did anyone say anything that I can see? Okay, I give a thumbs up guys if you're watching on the Instagram live just Did you switch the Wi-Fi or you on my data? I'm on Wi-Fi. Okay.
That's good. That's good I mean, you've got heaps of data anyway, but I just didn't want to go over it 10 gigs. We got a comment. The hygiene home voice says hi guys.
Oh, good idea. It's up subject Data that's a big issue that you have there Okay I'd like to I'd like some more data. Thanks Bit of data How's your week, mate? Yeah, busy really busy.
It has been a busy week here big media company before we've been putting in a good effort What's been the highlight? It's pretty nerdy but getting the storage server that we have upstairs. Oh, man. Now you're talking Josh's language We can we can like sign in remotely.
I did say that I set up Dylan as a user Oh, great. You got users go Yeah, but I did it so because he was on he normally uses PC and because he was using the iMac I set it up so that he could only read you can't write to make sure he doesn't fuck up any files accidentally on PC Yeah, on the on the on the mat What we're currently talking about is signing into a hard drive from a phone. Good week. How's it for you guys I mean, this is a weird thing that you guys would do.
What's missing. I said what's something we don't know about you Something that like you love there's a guilty little pleasure. It might be just watching everyone of Jason Statham's movies like I do I don't know if I've said that what is it Jason Statham? He's just done a fuckload name three I can't but I've watched about 40 plus and furious Transformer transformer the Transformer There's three one two or three.
I've tried to get us on IMDB as well. Oh, yeah, it's a long long process It's so clunky. Yeah, but I wanted to fill out so many typing the daily talk Sean Google Yeah, it has like more data and wikipedia. Yeah, something will have IMDB profiles.
Yeah, so I put you down as like a producer Video anything mr. Nice, Evan Probably I love reading subreddits just going through a bunch of edits and just reading through all the stuff people are posting Do you think it's like as the generation excels in this? Media dense and technology dense world that I look at something like someone's guilty pleasure is doing something online I kind of scoff at it's like I want because it's like you can do it from anywhere in the world And he's just like plugged in right which in my mind I don't know you're you're a different generation Do you see like it could be if you were to say I've been pressed by if you were said, yeah, you know what? I love going hiking like I love getting out sometimes by myself and just fucking walking through the bush and just like I know I've read one page of an encyclopedia every night Just something I mean that would be because it's all like a pedia Derek No, but they would they would just smack of desperately trying to signal in what they're trying to do something against what's happening the ball That you can't stop rolling which is Becoming you know everything being on the internet and private time in your phone like you subreddit Anyone you're seeing what they've done If you guilty pleasure was was maybe trolling people What's something for you Derek?
It's a bit old school that you just you can't give up Your idea of bit old schools will be not very old 2005 what's it saying from 2005 that you still do? It's a joke. Not really. I guess that I really missed the vote.
We've covered the whole big voyeurism thing before I do like it. I mean I like the idea of The big brother thing Sorry, this is a guy that used to fly up to the gold coast to watch the big brother eviction night. It's amazing. You don't have big brothering Canada.
Yeah, yeah, we do It's pretty amazing. I don't watch it, but we had it. I mean that is 100% a guilty pleasure And and what's even more unique is that you would fly up and have these weekends away with people you met online No, no, no, they were my friend. Oh, they're actually that's but you dealt with them online I said it was an old Facebook page.
The whole experience was all game book wasn't around people Wasn't it? This was 2009. This was like a good question. No, this would have been 2003.
You're right We do have a Facebook group now. You mentioned that though when we did that was created after the whole thing It was rolling on which is good place to gather. It's still active like when the big brother house burnt down Then someone posted the we filmed the telly smife the other day. She's gonna we're releasing a video Flex to we know be great.
I've been following the telly story. Yeah, she hangs out. She managed by When you say follow that, what do you mean like you see them? You see them sort of like string and like pins on a board.
Where are they now? Can you give us an update? Maybe basement room where I've got photos Yeah, I can't tell you right now. I know we can you tell me can you tell us his a news right now?
Can you tell us about a few things about some big some of the big brother people that we that might be interesting? Like what are a few interesting facts? Well, I really like the idea of following this story and seeing what like someone becomes a Someone becomes famous or well-known or a bit of a thing like they telly or or I don't remember his names, but the one that became Or is it's one? Exactly.
Yeah, it fits you in their own right. They weren't made famous by big brother They were exposed to a lot of people by big brother when they met in a Certainly but Fitzy, you know, like maybe that put him in there He was always gonna be a yappy kind of I always thought he would always would always have been a success It's what people say about Tommy's chatty and all that what Tommy's an example I think people say like people think Tommy's gonna be well-known by people. He just doesn't know how it's gonna happen Yeah, see big brother was around. Oh, I would have put Tommy in the big.
I would have put Tommy in the big. I know what was it the house one What was it the apartment like the block the block. Yeah, yeah, but that's with Amy or who do you apply? Yeah I mean you purely you're purely applying for big brother to be famous or to be what you say you're doing the block Because you wanted to build a fucking house now.
I don't even think I don't even think I'm right for reality television I think I'm too fucking it's it's your work. Well, I think I'm too Emotionally intelligent to the moment right like I can't be in a moment and be fucking forget that I'm in this room And I'm your film you're filming going on like I don't think I'd buy into it I think they want people who are gonna actually drop forget about that and just fucking are you're pissing me the fuck off You know like they get right into what you want for really I think I'm thinking too much about everything How's this looking house everyone reacting once it's like I would probably prevent myself from going to a place Where I'm abusing hot dogs fucking trying to sleep with crystal when I fuck one Chris Crystal was the one that couldn't cry didn't have tea ducks Crystal this mum and her was that a thing like that. Well, I'm thinking of Brie. Do you remember Brie?
Yep She was the one that didn't have tea ducks I got a quirk out of his nose. He's color blind. Mm-hmm. I just thought I'll just bring that up What do you let's just let's just dissect the color blind thing, okay, what color is this phone?
I mean, that's a thing that as people always say that as soon as you say I'm color blind. They say what's that color? Yeah, yeah pretty much and so how did you work it? How did one work out that they color blind?
Also at the start it was literally through those tests where you've got the numbers in the circles with all the different dots And so if you go through it, where are these? We've done trust. No, no, you can do them on Google. I've been typing color blind.
So Preet Let's go before you even step into doing this test. Why what are you? What are you thinking? Are you looking online to go?
How can I check if I'm color blind? No, you just like people will just suggest it. Oh, have you seen this? Can you do this and it's literally go to the issue came up?
No, no, how would I know? Yeah, this is what I'm saying. Oh, that color is different to this one. You're like no, it's not.
No, okay, so when you go into the army and show that you can't be color blind. Yeah, I'm like fighter jets Something might work out the point of trying to apply. What does that number say? Oh, my God.
Yeah, I can't see anything That's that's that's that is the number that Bodie thinks that's my age 45 Now I can't see anything. That's perfect. What is orange? Yeah, you cannot see anything in that.
Can we put this on screen? Wow, this is this is how it came up. Like it wrapped some story on this young fella high school would have been in high school like Actually, maybe maybe final final year of 69 looks like you see seven. Oh, I got it.
You got it Like that's piecing it together. But yeah, it's it was a final year of I think primary school We were on a trip to New Caledonia because it was like a new Caledonia for primary school camp. Well, yes, it was a no It's a French. It was a French.
You know, that's what people got like we went there for a holiday. It's like going to Fiji or something Yeah, we went there in primary school. Yeah. Okay.
Go on. I think I went to the fucking dandelions. Yeah, I went to New Caledonia No, no, no fun. Go on.
No, so we you're next door's paper. Oh, sorry going on. You might not hear it. Yeah, it's gone No, so it was it was a French trip because we had to learn French in primary school And so they took like 20 kids away to New Caledonia.
Yeah, my older brother did it and then I wanted to do it as well And then my younger brother did it but yeah, it was it was in New Caledonia Like people were just like showing me and I couldn't see anything So just went around like all these different people just like can you see this can you see this? I just couldn't see anything and do you get to be embarrassed? Yeah, I mean kids. Yeah, it's not gonna be embarrassed about Yeah, yeah, no, you're just like, oh, that's so annoying that you can't see it like it's no you do you feel bad you can't see it Yeah, you identify yourself as different to the kid.
Yeah, so has it what's changed since you've got older like when did that feeling? Well, you just can't do anything about it. So you just learn to deal with it like I mean, it's it doesn't it doesn't phase me It hasn't phase me since probably primary school, but yeah, I don't know. It's not like I can change it So do you know what?
So when I went to the optometrist I said I've got a red and orange Like colorblindness, but it's only I see like a few hundred thousand different shades of red and orange versus millions No, it's breaking. No, you guys see millions and I see hundreds of thousands. So you're like eight bit wait It's good to Derek the genius What do you find like what is Tom coming home and caring about as a kid how old's Tom now 11? What is it an 11-year-old care about in 2019 for me?
I was caring about pubes. I was if I can traumatize. I didn't have pubes No, no, no 11. Oh, no, why didn't have them?
No, it was when I was even I was you seven one with this. I was 12. Yeah, 12 I was playing golf and people would like show their pubes. Yeah Traumatized by yeah It's always with the developed kids just back and make you feel shit.
Yeah, it comes along like the story It's coming home with all sorts of misinformation now, and that's like I can't really fake news about human bodies Who who told you that night? I've got examples, but you know, he's forgotten But you come over there, you know, something like ridiculous concept of what's gonna happen in puberty or whatever and you go Oh, you told you and you got to you can't just go listen. Don't listen to your mates. They're fuckwits But it's true.
Okay, so listen buddy. Oh, all these men but the kid who's all kids are fuckwits The kid who's who's told you this for a fact. He's heard it from his big brother Yeah, remember that game that you can't call Chinese whispers anymore. I said it's a bit like that I was like in doing giving.
Oh, you discuss it. Yeah, Chinese whispers three deal look up Chinese was just please baby boy We spent as one of those ones where you don't know the background you do know the eating giving world. I'm looking at Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was inside. Yeah, Louis CK has morals The doodoo is wanking in front of people Get permission, but it was still a bit sus.
Yeah, yeah, but he said it is the it is the most it is the worst is the most licensing You can say most culturally inappropriate thing you can say that's what he said in the joke is So what I'm here. I want to dig dive into what Thomas is coming back with Okay, but it's definitely it's definitely Completely outrageous and wrong, but he's like he obviously needs a phone like kids are saying I need I want a phone I'm obsessed. Yeah, yes. I want to give my daughter a phone Because she doesn't have that same obsession with tech Nine I wanted to give it I wanted to give her an iPod right side to talk with the boy I said look we've got a problem here because we got this kind of hierarchy of tech of old tech There's hand me down sort of vibe.
I said I've given you the iPod nano, right here. It's all go I got a problem. I want to give clover An iPod nano. There's no way I'm gonna go buy an iPod nano.
That's outrageous. Yeah, I'm still I don't know I imagine on the second hand market if anyone's got them. It's nice Evan and he's been lent it from his mate They're in the drawers like if I didn't have kids I would have fling wanted a kid out of my drawer Anyway, I've taken and I've had a big talk to him. I said look I can't I can't give I know I can't give her the old iPhone for five or whatever it is and set up as an iPod because I know you'll crack it He goes rightly so I will go bananas wait So what was he concerned about the four of them so that again?
He couldn't bear it He couldn't emotionally cope if I gave clover a phone even if it's been reborn as an Nana he's got the nano I said that why don't you give her the nano for your birthday and then we'll see what happens in the future It's the only way to open up the proper hierarchy but there's gonna be a time where he doesn't know why but and so He's got nothing about it. He said I don't know where it is lost. He's lost the nano So he gave her for a birthday the rights to own his lost I found an iPod in the iPhone in the in the playground. Actually, I didn't find it guy come up He said is this yours?
I was like yes Give to me I'm like call home and then it just rang home I gave it back to him and he's like hello I found your phone and there was turns out this little monkey kid who just didn't always jump around hang on the bars Long here. He's so interesting. He was spying on me once. Anyway, it was his way to this guy's story So it's just a kid so just keep it always hang at the park.
He's a young young dude How long here probably like 11 probably semi similar as your son and he's always scooting around Anyway, he's got a mobile phone that he just dropped his car. There it is, but these kids don't fucking that I don't connect that it costs a lot of money. Even the old ones. Yeah, oh, you're not gonna get an old new one That's done.
And Johnny Smith's three to deal. Yeah, Chinese whispers is an inaccurately Transmitted gossip game which refers to a sequence of repetitions of a story each one different slightly from the original So that the final telling bears only a scant resemblance of the original It's like I would call a broken telephone. Okay, you got about 99 for it I guess you get a bunch of people in a circle one of them has a message you pass it around each person passes it and then it's like What what gets distorted and you're allowed to say it nowadays or you say just type it type that it? In appropriate Chinese whispers.
See what happens. There'll be some left leaning says it's an ongoing struggle Give me two seconds. I'm gonna read into this one. That's fine.
It sounds like it's I mean It's probably just because I think you even did in school, right? It's like a improv game. You want to see how much bullshit gets it What was funny? I just I just got Tommy.
It's just whispers in China In France, but like it even giving it could well have a background in In something it's probably rude like I was like Emperor time of like, you know, wisp is going around the fucking do you know What a FERFI is this is good FERFI is a beer blue and a shepherd and FERFI's yeah No, no else is out of shape it what SBC FERFI's which are cast iron water tanks On cards like you can see them on farms like my brother-in-law's got a couple of old FERFI's yeah, and they were made in Shepherd Yeah, but the FERFI family hence the FERFI be now, right? But a FERFI means a story that might not be quite true like the back end of a Chinese whisper But it's not a game that kids play in Cub Scouts It's so a FERFI is a bit of a story that you've heard of someone that he's heard yeah Yeah, like known as a FERFI and you know why why because of the water lines are so they the car would bring this water tank Maybe in a war or something and the soldiers would queue up with their cups or a drink of water Get some water and also want the workers the shearers and the farmers So there was a huge line of all the blokes waiting for water And the stories would work their way back the line in the line and that's where all the people would be together all Sharing stories that kind of get all mixed up from back home or from back in Melbourne And so the FERFI line was where all these old stories would well they accurate or not accurate No, that's the point That's why we are mixed up by the time they're Chinese whispers what you've described It's like the real version of the Chinese I don't know whether Chinese whispers is real or not. That's what we're trying to work out today What do you mean? Well, it's real.
That's what they call it They say they sit you down and promise on say let's play Chinese with you Yeah, but what you're saying is the difference between FERFI's and Chinese whispers is FERFI's actually happened It's the real world Yeah, yeah, the notion of Chinese whispers happened to create FERFI's Oh, well, I know it was a deliberate fuck. I'm glad I wasn't alive all those years ago. I wish I was I wish in the 1800s. Oh, dude, I mean absolutely destroyed.
No, because everything was your currency. Where's your currency? Back then it was all handled already. Jester.
What the Joker? Joker. Yeah, it's not the horse. No, but seriously I think that it would be there would have been more of a business for theatre.
Well, don't you think? Definitely. I think like Derek's got a lot of um, sovereign hill vibes Derek can fucking build the house with his bare hands and don't take a car apart and put it back together There's no guys bro. No cars.
He's got to deal with horses and carts. He could build the cat. Yeah, he would do But then you'd also be helping the economy with the red drops. You'd buy a lot of raspberry drops.
I reckon you could be you know, no You definitely would have been or I mean I could see you inventing something Josh, you know, like you're like smart enough, you don't think You just take what I don't know some process some weird thing I've worked out how to trap the water running down this like I feel like you just you'd stumble upon Maybe I'd be media. I'd be doing the new stuff. I'd be typing. I'd be a journalist using it like the big Like to have photography.
Yeah. Yeah They had gunpowder and shit. That's right. It's been cloaking over their heads.
I'm pretty sure Derek still uses one of those cameras at his studio Have you taken the kids to sovereign Hill? Not yet, but I love sovereign Hill. I'm triggered by sovereign way. I love it What's like a gold finger when I was a kid?
They couldn't get me away from the creek. Really? You know, you used to put the can still you can you pay the money and you go down by the creek Mm-hmm. You were a bucket a whole pan full of dirt.
It's got gold flex in it already worthless little bits of gold in it They worthless they give it. Yes. Well, I fucking bought the container to hold it But but but they once you do that you pan it and then they give you a little container and you put the gold flex that you found in there It's like no, I'm not finished yet. I was digging more dirt Yeah, yeah, yeah, not realizing that the gold is already in the dirt They've put it in there for kids that creeks been mined by kids No, it's gold.
No, it's gold. It has to be gold because the panning gold is heavier Like let me right so the way panning works is you're shuffling around in the water and the gold works itself. Tell us some other facts about gold Oh, I don't know. It is it what's the A.G.
This is a gold symbol But isn't it's the highest conduct? I don't know how to say the two but it runs the best conduct they're along with um copper Isn't it like them up being the most conductive? Well, they've always turned out to be metal, but it's so expensive and weaker in its purest form But it is a yeah Electroplating you don't need that much like these the tips on this connection here. We'll have gold in it.
Yeah, we got it. Yeah Derek you've listened to the show for a while We used to do something called close the loop Where we would there was a time we would say something and then we'd actually at another date pick it up and close that loop Out of the 392 episodes that we've done. Yeah, is there any loop closing that you could think that you could do today? If I could record I often when I've got your show on Grab for my phone and I go and I just want another new tech I want there to be a next level of podcast where you just press the button like the guys out there on the instagram or whatever But you can somehow just quickly Get an argument back.
You know people say I was I'm talking to your podcast in the car. Yeah, you guys are struggling pronouncing a word or something and I just Have to be away We can have an app where you listen to the daily talk show and you've got the thing in there's a press button You can literally go and rebat and at time code it. Yeah, and so it literally will get the pause on that time I want that so bad build it. Do you know last night walking at home from work pouring right?
It's not too bad. I had my north face jacket on. Yeah, but I was using Spotify No more free Spotify Are you using free Spotify? No, no, no, we've got one account.
So are you using free Spotify? I used to and they broke me Face broke me within five songs You went from having fucking platinum Spotify. I didn't know but I didn't understand I thought oh I can deal with a few hands and so that's fine. Yeah, and so I listened to a lot of random playlists I was listening to um Disney soundtrack playlists just random Disney songs and So I'm pressing play and the thing is Disney has a diverse range of music I've got everything from Lion King to Frozen to all that shit And so there's certain ones that I connect with and there's a certain ones that I don't and so I'm trying to click next And it's not letting me it's not letting me click next And so and then it says not only that it's then giving me an ad to say come back Not not only try premium, but it's come back to Spotify premium.
They knew I left Yeah, of course I did and so they got fucking harder on it You know what's amazing the stories we tell ourselves yesterday in the office I heard Josh say something around the lines of I'm actually I actually love hearing Ads are being right. It's great to understand I like ads but all they're doing is saying come back. Okay. No, they're not actually you fucked up You fucked up come back to premium the only other than I'm hearing at the moment They're doing a big push is I reckon I'm the reason why they've done it too.
One three one triple four One three one triple four is Derek. Can we just call it now? If I just call it on, definitely not Pretty cool. Can you actually type in one three one triple four?
Yes, the police assistant line Oh, no, we're gonna call it And so this is it's the whole tag line is when sirens aren't needed and I said to And so Pete I was walking with Pete Shepherd the other day talk wrong talk wrong and I said oh One three one triple four have you seen that you guys are no It's just like when no sirens are needed and his first thought was is it if you need them to sneak up Yeah, that's what I know that's not my first thought it's when it's not an emergency Reporting your car going missing doesn't require sirens fucking the honey here It's trying and congest the lines the fucking there's a massive problem with if someone breaks into your house There's a massive problem with groms like Josh would get on triple zero at the fucking drop of a coin four times this year So that's very important things. Okay. I got stabbed another person got their head beat in there was a ram rate ram rate You could probably call a call not nice. I'm kidding me now.
They'd run off. Oh, what's happened? Jesus, this is the problem Are you fucking kidding me better those four things that happen the one that you think doesn't Sirens the dirty gets punched you call the cops the person who got stabbed called the cops sirens the meeting ram rate where there's a cuss Start into the sharp. Yeah.
I mean, this is evaluating the situation in the moment So I didn't get a hot fuck an ambulance for 3d deal finger. It's you're thinking of the no I'm thinking about is he's he dying is he dying is there a lot of blood if it was like a gushing bladder would If I don't know very then absolutely of course, but yeah, it's a bad injury just to finish off Have you done a bad injury before? Um, it's good. It is not really Very similar to deal one.
Well, could you remember? The whole top of my thumb came but it wasn't bad as him because it wasn't kind of down attacking the bone It was like right off the end and it's like a little egg in a kid you chop the top of the knife and open it So I've been having issues with that lately at home because the fucking egg shell goes into the egg yolk You just have to tough it out. Do you do you use a spoon or do you use a knife? No, it's a spoon.
People fuck I've seen it was a kid you go to something else's house and they they boiled egg and everything. Yeah, and they'd get a spoon and go Let me tell you a bit a million times to shatter it. No, just get a knife and just grow for it coddled eggs It's basically doing exactly what you're doing to the the boiled air the soft boiled egg But you crack the eggs into this little like that as a little screw top lead on with a little hook and you pop it into hot water It's beautiful You'd love it and then you cook it But then you untwist the top and then you got like a you know, I can dip bread in or we can just use a spoon So it's basically what the inside cheese. Yeah.
Yeah, you should do that here. Yeah, it would smell Yeah, actually none of that We've had enough issue with cauliflower issue. Did you hear that we found out from 3d deal? What was causing these shoes?
I fixed it. What was it the when we had the really bad rainy other night? Power went out and when the power went out the freezer obviously stops working, right? So the cauliflower had thawed like what had leaked out and was pulling up in a little cavity at the back of the fridge I mean for one no one told me about the fucking power I didn't know the power went out until I thought about it.
Number two had the power go out and come back on It just doesn't know so there was no so the power just didn't go. It didn't flick it. You didn't trip us It's a cert and so do we know this for a fact that there was a hundred percent fact that's it I'm saying you really know if there was a power outage would be if there was a fucking 12 We still don't know I can't I don't I don't know if it was 100% This is a guy knows more about power than all of us right here. What do you know about power?
My point is I don't know if that is 100% true. How do we know it goes off if it just goes off like it's an exterior power cut All your power goes off then comes back on again. Yeah, if you turn off your mains It would have been it would have to be off for quite some time. That's what I would think yeah to That's like a 12-hour power cut to make cauliflower melt.
Yeah Why's the cauliflower the freezer anyway just or or our salt our freezer here at the office? It's a bar fridge freezer Someone's what what the truth story is someone's accidentally unplug the fridge. This is what it always turns out to be Plug the back in there must have been a bar ootage Thank you for coming on weekend banter. Oh for a second.
