Roughly around the year 1800, this started to change, and by WW1, it was the complete opposite. In the middle ages, battle commanders preferred to avoid battle for fear of losing too many men. But looking at the battle commanders’ decisions in WW1, how they would send hundreds of thousands of young men to their early graves in a day, you would think their objective WAS to lose their own men.
