#397 | Nothing Seems To Fill This Place

I'm all right. I don't know, though. I think the allergies are starting to set in. It's starting to get to that point where things are blooming.

I just woke up today, like, just eyes itchy, nose running. It's not a good start, you know? You're going to have to start loading up on, I don't know, server tech or whatever the hell they're pumping into kids now. You little bitch.

It's such an insane thing. I've talked about how I've started getting allergies in the last few years for the first time, and it's, like, so mind-blowing and weird. Like, I just have to blow my nose constantly, and, like, it's, like, what is going on here? I said before that I was, like, allergies.

I'm allergic to dust. Like, shut up. Alerting to dust. Alerting to pollen?

Went out for, uh, to the store this morning before the show. We didn't normally go out before we record. It's my first time to our, like, you know, where our Walmart and our Target is, and I was amazed. The mounds of snow that are just insanely high.

I haven't seen anything, like, in years around here. I was like, man, that's going to be here for, like, May, probably. Um, and the roads are still fucked. You know, everyone's fighting over parking spots.

Do you know about the parking chair? Yeah, of course. That I know. Yeah.

I live in Boston. Okay. Here's what I've wondered about that. People around Pittsburgh claim the parking chair as their thing, as it's a Pittsburgh thing.

But as you just said, and as was my inclination, this happens in other cities where it snows. Surely. I'm looking it up on Wikipedia. A parking chair is a chair that is used by a motorist when formally mark a public park.

There's a huge origin. The practice is common throughout areas of the United States. The items used are sometimes referred to as the Pittsburgh parking chair. Okay.

Due to their common use of Pittsburgh and nearby surroundings. I mean, I've seen that in New York as well. There's also the whole honor system thing, which I think you can get away with in the suburbs, but not so much in the city where it's like you just know you're not supposed to park in some spot that's been dug out. For people that don't know, what we're referring to is that you dig your car out and then you put your car back there.

You're just not supposed to do that. Right. Like if you do the work to dig it out, it's supposed to be your spot. I love that.

I love the parking chair. That's funny. Dude. Well, I feel like they haven't been very prevalent the last few years because we just haven't gotten that much snow.

And when I took Holly to her appointment on Tuesday, we're in the parking garage and I looked out because there's like, you know, some apartments and stuff and all line of the street was parking chairs. I was like, God, it's good to see it in its natural environment here in downtown. Well, it wasn't downtown Pittsburgh. Right.

In the heart of Pittsburgh, the parking chairs are out alive and well. Essentially, I never heard it called the Pittsburgh parking chairs. It's funny. You know, I was wondering that in some cities and some municipalities in Boston, they would have these things that like these dumpsters that they would dump the snow and it would melt the snow.

I saw that this year. Like I saw it on Twitter. I'm doing that in New York City. Yeah.

Man, we need that here. We need it because there's just nowhere for it to go. Yeah, it's a problem. The winter's going to be getting more severe, which is awesome.

I love it. And this is what, let's see, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So this is like my seventh, this is like the sixth and seventh calendar year, I guess. And there have been three years or so where it didn't snow at all.

Yeah. And then, or like a dusting or whatever. Dude, it was, I was talking to Adam Yeehan recently and I was talking to them about, it was below freezing for eight days. Wow.

Yeah. Like it didn't, it didn't end. It ended up snowing and then all turned ice. It wasn't even frozen rain or anything like that.

It just, it was so, it never got warm again. So it is the snow we got. It snowed here. Let me see.

It snowed here, January 24th. We're recording on February 5th. It is still everywhere. It's only been above freezing the last two days.

And, uh, people, they plowed our street a week, a week, one week after the storm. Yeah. They don't know what the fuck to do down here with all this. They have no idea.

Dumping, and now the streets are all dirty. That's what I hate about the winter is the dirtiness. Yeah. I hate it.

It reminds me of doing groundscaping and landscaping. When I went there, people know that I worked on the landscaping crew or whatever. And I used to have the, the, the, the, the snow pile. It always reminds me of that.

I told the story about how I was the lowest ranking guy on staff. I'm like, you know, I was like the student and they were all, and so they would send me and do things. I would have to climb the snow piles and pick garbage out of them. And then like the next day, a little more melted and you have to go pick more garbage out of them.

It's like that fucking ridiculous. You'd find money. Oh. I found the $20 bill multiple times when I was landscaping.

$10 bills. So they often get blown in the corner of a building or something when you're like going to the flower beds. Keep an eye out. It's like those, you've seen those videos of people cleaning the movie theaters and they find all my shit.

That looks very satisfying to do that. Like I can only get it. Yeah. You know, people are so disgusting.

I mean, I don't go to the movies at all anymore, but like they just leave their shit behind these buildings. It's like, why? That's what their job is. You don't finish your drink, you know, you just dump it all on the ground.

You know, what's the deal? You gotta wait. You're like, when you're walking out, you know how they're like standing there waiting because they know the stupid cinephiles are sitting there watching the credits and they're like, just let me do my fucking job. That's where you stand in front of them and dump it out and then say, thanks.

Thank you for your service. Well, it's good to see you guys. It's gonna be here. What's the temperature right now?

34 degrees marginally above. Dude, I even got it. The snow's covering the fucking solar panels. Oh, yeah.

Like, your solar production's really low. Like, I know. And they send you an email, what's wrong with you? Sun again?

Is the sun gone? God, I just die, huh? I do miss snow, man. Like, I will say, you say, it sounds so much more dramatic to say below freezing than 30 degrees.

Yeah, right. It's like, it's so much more dramatic. But I miss snow, man. Like, over here it's like 72.

It's like, it's just warm as fuck already. Like, and it's February. You know, it's barely. We're barely.

It gets snow here. We had like a dust thing, like a year or two, maybe three maximum, three years ago. And it was fucking weird. That was like really upsetting.

Yeah, that is upsetting. Snow in Burbank, California. Yeah. That's too much.

I've been to like Tahoe and it snows up there. That's about in California. That's about. It snows really bad up there, actually.

I usually don't listen to anything we do. But once in a while, I also go back and listen to our own shows when I'm talking about it. I'm like, what did I even say about this game? I don't remember.

I don't have any memory of this place. Sacred Streaming continues. We did the Xbox Developer Direct. There's still rumors that there's going to be a state of play.

If there is, we'll do it over there as well. So you can check that out. If and what happens. I recently played through a lot of Mega Man games.

We did the Metacritic draft. But the recent smash hit over at Sacred Streaming is where we already crushed Jaffe. Conor McCurdy wrote in and said, hey, CDC, I have to say the call and stream may be my favorite one that you guys have done. I know Conor said he isn't sure how to incorporate Jaffe in more yet, but what about a once or twice a month call and stream?

Just throwing ideas out there because we could all use a little more Jaffe in our lives. Thanks for all you find him and do. And Double Duty Dirk wrote in and said, hey, CDC, Conor Dustin, if you have not done so yet, I was hoping that you'd be able to regale Chris on the update to the now even more infamous first cause divorce and sacred simple history. We'll love to hear his thoughts on the absurdity of the situation.

Here's where things get even funnier. Because I go on Discord after we're done. Chris messages us an audio file. Yeah.

That's how you know it's serious. I appreciated it. And talks to us about how funny he thought the stream was and how Jaffe was authoriles. I already emailed him.

We're going to do the stream again in a couple of weeks. We're streaming every Monday. We're going to have Jaffe back on in a couple of weeks. I had a great time.

I thought it was fucking hysterical. Like that was a truly funny stream. And there's just something magical about Jaffe that I don't know. I just love him.

I just really love him. And I think he's so ridiculous. And that guy calling in about his divorce was, that was a classic. We actually, unprompted, Blackmore did an edit of it.

And Dustin doesn't message me like, should we really be posting? And I'm like, yeah, this guy is like, I don't know. I don't want it to be like where we're just destroying this dude. He was earnestly calling.

He's a fan. So we decided, very rare, not to publish the cut down of it. I think it's in the Discord. I think I posted it in our, so if you really want to see it, it's in our Discord.

But yeah, I texted you because I was like, it's a complicated situation. Where it's like, I think he deserved the beatdown that he got. Particularly from Jaffe in some ways. But it's like, I don't know.

You start to feel a little bad about it. I don't know. It's conflicting. I was like, oh, I gotta see this.

I'm curious what it is. And I was expecting more standard stuff, which is still fine. I'm into it. But I was just eating pizza.

I was watching. And the speed at which it went so wrong is what really got me, man. And I don't normally send audio texts or anything like that. But I was just like, I needed to be clear how big the smile on my face was as I was telling you how funny I thought it was.

Because if I just said, that was a funny stream. Like in text, I don't think it would have read as honestly, as I wanted it to come across. Yeah, I appreciate that. Because, dude, that was a trip, man.

And I love that you're just like, you're clearly losing it. Yeah, yeah. What do you think is going to happen? I had someone.

You know, like, that's where I lost it. That's what I heard. What do you think is going to happen? I doubled over, man.

It's good stuff. It reminded me of like a, I mean, it reminded me of trash TV, which is, you know, just really got me. I love it. We didn't, you know, people, you know, called in.

I don't want to get into so many non-gaming things. If we could do shit like that, though, that doesn't touch third rails, I can make everyone mad and still have fun. But I just, it's like David Jaffe is, it's what I used to say about Nick Scarpino, or Nick and I used to say all the time, it's like, you know, like the Razor's Edge, like the best thing in the world and the worst thing in the world. You know, you have to like stay on board and not cross the line.

But the thing I was saying is, I said this to Dustin, it's like, people always talk about how like belligerent Jaffe is or like how he goes overboard and says things. I'm like, honestly, like, I'm not sure on any show we've ever done where I feel like, why did you say that? Like, how could you say something? I don't think he's ever done anything on that show.

I'm like, what he did on his other show on Locale Live or whatever, where he's talking about the dude's fiancee. He's talking about Keenstar Slytherin. Right. That was, I mean, that's a legendary moment.

Like, that is a legendary Jaffe moment. And I feel like there's another one. Monday the 16th, he'll be back, so you're warm in the moment. Yeah, yeah.

Dustin, how did you feel about it? You were there. You were hanging out for dear life. I know.

I became the target for part of it. Though I did notice there's been some, a small amount of discourse about people that were like, wow, Jaffe was too much of an asshole to Dustin. Oh, another one of these? And here's the thing.

Good, good, good. I thought like on the stream, we like took a moment. We're like, just everyone knows we're good. But that's not, it wasn't enough.

It's, I don't know. You can't just spell that kind of thing. It's just the way it reads, I guess, to people. Yeah.

Yeah. But it was fun. It was a lot of fun. Oh, the Schindler's List line was like, that was fucking hysterical.

That was an absolutely hysterical thing that he said. Wait, what was that? I don't think I remember that one. Oh, he was like, he was making fun of Dustin for not being enthusiastic enough when he reads.

It's like he's adding something to Schindler's List. Oh, right. Yeah, Daffy shows up on our stream, you know, very successful stream. Maybe more successful than his.

And then tells us, tells me how to do my job. Okay. Evil. All right.

Fair enough. Dude, the thing that got me was, oh my God, what'd he say? Do I listen to Punching Up or do I play with my kid? He's a naturally entertaining person.

I don't know if he understands that. I think he does, but I also don't think he understands that as much as he, I don't think he could understand it more. You know what I mean? Yeah, I know.

I also, I'm also, maybe just because I know him well and so like that, but I'm also surprised by how many people are put off by him. I'm like, you're really put off by this. And I'm like, that's surprising to me. I don't find him that divisive.

He feels a certain way politically or whatever, probably more aligned with Chris. I think that's perfectly fine. It doesn't really come up. And if it does, it's like, who cares?

You know? He's a true entertainer. He's really funny. And I'm glad that people enjoyed that stream.

I messaged Justin afterwards. I was like, I had a great time on that stream. Because sometimes, I would much rather do that than play a game. And that's what I said to you, right?

I was like, I would rather do that than play a game any day of the week on stream. Like, yeah, period. End of. Playing games on stream is kind of like the least, like the least one I've ever had streamed is playing a game.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I was going to say, I feel like if we did some of my suggestions for games, if we had a more cooperative experience, it would lend to the streaming, you know, medium. Yeah, those would be better. Yeah.

Like, what was the suggestion? Probably a friend slap or something? We don't need to do that every week. But I think that we haven't touched the surface on playing together enough.

That's true. Well, there might be a game that accommodates three persons that was just announced. Oh, true. I feel very confident I'll play online.

So. All right. So we don't do that. But the betas, I mean, I will probably be closed.

But we'll get to that. We're talking about Horizon, Hunter's Gathering. We'll talk about it a little later. I can treat you to see that.

Yeah. But you're right, Justin. We do need to play more games together. I am slowly trying to.

It's a mental thing for me where I'm like, I'm not even acting on it. I'm just kind of trying to be mentally malleable. I'm like, yeah, yeah. And then I just love playing games by myself.

It's just what I've always done. Just always for my entire life. What I've done. And 64 was a little bit of an interruption to that.

I was in high school. Everyone had one. We loved it. But I just, it's just so antithetical for the reason I play games.

that it's hard for me to get enthusiastic about that and since you're not playing games to the standard that you would play them by yourself when you're streaming anyway then putting me in an unfamiliar situation is not going to be great you know but that's not what you're there for i guess yeah i mean well here's the other thing too it's like con like listening we're all getting old you know we're aging there's gonna be a time you know multiplayer games are gonna be fucking possible yeah you're not gonna be able to hear you know you'll have to do what you say they'll probably make these whole bot networks where you can like always play them but they'll play with like bots that are catered towards your skill oh yeah that'd be interesting yeah but like uh you know experiment a little bit you know there's a lot of stuff out there that's not like necessarily you know like a reflex and like hyper skill driven or like it's not like counter strike or something you know it's funny i didn't put this in the news guys because i think it was that interesting but it's funny you say that chris because the whole division definitive edition thing right it'd be nothing and it's it's i came because when i saw that i'm like all right at the very least they're porting it to ps5 cool right and i was i said i was looking forward to it because that is one of the online games that i really love even though i play by myself you want to do with other people like you kind of interact with it in the way you want and then they just come on it's just so funny with uh with the division which is i or outriders which is a much less popular example these games i really love and then like yeah never mind and they did that with the heartlands which i was excited about like i was all to be excited about that game and we have to wait for the division three but i just thought that was funny a coincidence because i am more in that mood i held i was might have turned something on facility the 49ers that's next to an electrical substation and they've been experiencing an unusual number of serious injuries over the last years and people have connected that it's the electric the electromagnetic whatever going on that place that's injuring the players apparently to the point where even the players are starting to be like yo we gotta look at like moving this place and not playing here um which i think is awesome yeah it's really um the big game is super bowl i was curious what are you guys doing for the super bowl is an interviewer sports fan really but it's a but it's a cultural event that non-sport people regularly partake in so uh yeah i've had years where i've not watched it at all i just stayed home but this year my mom was kind of interested in watching it just because she likes she's into the cultural event aspect of it so she invited us over we're getting frozen pizzas and snacks cool probably have a few beers i'm always down for that frozen pizza you're not bold enough to try to order pizza no no no yeah i'm not doing that i always wonder like how bad it really is because like is everyone scared didn't you say you did that once you ordered pizza and it was totally fine yeah that sounds familiar it might have been like a couple years like papa john's or something yeah pj's dude papa came through what um what's what's the frozen pizza of choice my personal favorite is a new recent discovery it's like some detroit style pizza that's frozen is that what it is no it's called like motor city pizza oh i've never heard of it yeah if you guys ever see this stuff it's actually pretty damn good but since my parents are buying i assume that it will be all the frozen pizza which uh it's pretty good they have they have some that's like not just it's more like a sam's club frozen pizza but they make it there right package it up so it'll be you know it'll be good it'll be free pizza and free pizza is good for me yeah i love pizza yeah uh what do you know i don't know i think i've heard rumblings of like two different things that are happening but i'm kind just like i don't know i kind of don't want to do anything but we'll see i'll make a snap decision on the day i guess like which one's more convenient to get to probably but yeah i mean i've been to i've done the super party thing before where you know the game's on the background it's not really like you know it's kind of there and the commercials pop up or the halftime shows up and everybody kind of kind of pays attention oh the commercials i feel like are not that big of a deal anymore no because they even publish them sometimes before the super bowl now um yeah so it's like all right the internet changed all that right video on the internet really wasn't even the internet it was video like high speed internet changed that i remember that when it was not as exciting anymore but yeah i've got some some tentative plans i've kind of opened myself up to the possibility of like you know i mean like i don't have to go which is nice freedom yeah it is a it is gonna be a game i think seawks patriots uh tropic was asking if i was gonna be for the patriots my wife's a patriots fan i'm definitely not rooting for the but i was i was um i was talking like it's like i have become she knows i'm much more mature colin because i really hate the patriots like a lot and i really had to turn that off just to be nice you know just to and not be such a sore loser it's not even like it's a competition right i just hate them because they always need us i hate them um and uh my wife's a big fan and it's like yeah it's time to like so i just try to be neutral i congratulate her on my god it was a nice play you know that kind of thing i'm not getting crazy with it in my heart i want the seawks to win of course you know i mean of course just don't let her hear that she knows i mean she knows and by the way i do think the seawks will win game but i don't think it's gonna be so a lot of people think the seawks are the obvious favorite i'm not so sure about that but the thing that bothers me the most um i might have reflected on this in the past i hate neutral site games and the super bowl is a neutral site game and i hate that i think it's so stupid the team with a better record should play at home in the super bowl that would be sick then you have like the craziness of a home crowd you know that's the thing about super bowl is like it's $20,000 or so to go at least and you it's just really wealthy people and the people with money that are fans of the team that want to see them but these two teams have not only been in the super bowl recently but won the super bowl recently and played each other in the super bowl somewhat recently so it's not even that novel it might be but i was saying the game i would go to is the afc championship game because that game would be in new york if they had the record and that would be nuts that would probably be the craziest fan crowd ever it would be so cool to be in that but that's never gonna happen so um they were in the afc championship twice you know 15 years ago but they played away they played in pittsburgh actually one of those years i saw that the nfl draft is gonna be in pittsburgh yeah they're starting to move around the last few years because they used to be in the same places over in oregon which is cool they give each fan base a little bit of a taste you know yeah so you know uh brandon from the show brandon duncan he worked his job is right in that area and because he works at a place that runs like server like data center and servers they're discussing having people stay there for multiple days at a time because getting in and out of that area is going to be so fucked in pittsburgh so they're just gonna have him like a lay at work yeah which he's fine with because he'll get like time to have oh yeah that's right while he's sleeping yes yes i was just thinking about now that i had a big paying job or anything like that but i was talking about my ground keeping job at northeastern when it would snow they would send everyone around in box trucks with like salt and shovels and you'd like to have little shrunk teams and when they knew it was going to snow or they were expecting the snow they would put you on time and a half and just keep you on and they would call you and i had many moments where i got to sleep and get paid it was like 15 an hour so yeah right this is fucking oh this is awesome because i never had an hourly job with that except for that job where it's like oh like time and a half didn't exist i just expected whatever you're gonna do for your salary so um well we'll see what happens with that big pick for the job in that draft pick two i can't open this fucking bottle there's something going on with uh the smart water molds the last few months where like i i shut my caps i shut my caps really tight you know like what happened i'm laughing at the smart water molds yeah i think they changed something about it because or maybe it was a cap because i just like there we go i got it's like i don't know i just i just i don't know if it's like a fidgety thing where i just keep twisting the bottle in my hand it's just so tight but it's never like because you know some people like they'll they'll have a two-year and they'll just twist it with the cap a little bit and then you go pick up and it's like what did you do can't you shut the fucking bottle come on man yeah i feel like i sometimes i uh i'll tighten like i wouldn't even think about what i'm doing but i'll like accidentally tighten something to the point where like i fucked it up for myself i did have a fucking jar of olives the other day where like i was trying to open i was like what the fuck did i do to this thing bring it up i can't get this fucking thing open for the life of me i have to do the tap thing you know oh yeah that works on glass bottles like taking the knife and just hitting it it does i don't know i don't understand why that works but it does i don't know like on jelly or something like i think it just kind of unsticks things or like just tweaks things a little bit because you're talking about like a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a million it just needs to like pop but i get that does work and what's funny is that like if you have to do with a jar or something it's like the metal jar or the metal top it like leaves dense and then like over time is dented yeah this thing oh my god just texted me do you need a new bottle of water before i leave no i'm good thank you oh you're right there like screaming all right all right p marcus wrote in and said howdy boys i'd like to respond to mr feldudo's writing last week concerning how people select and about how you select entries and if new names influence your decision thanks to chris i am one of the people who change their names often i've had probably 20 things read by you colin close to 100 across the other shows although never on duke the only thing i ever did to intentionally catch your attention was lost profits memorial daycare center other than that i just let my name be whatever random bullshit i want to hear chris say do you feel betrayed or would you agree with me my view that i must be a decent question asker take care both yeah both things i mean one way you did betray me on the other on the other hand you are a good question obviously you're because when we get that next survey every once in a while where it's like i submitted five questions i never got selected i'm like your question has been horrible at that point yeah so you are obviously a talented question asker but you're also grabbing my eye and my bias towards new names and you took advantage of that you knew what you were doing you did it anyway and it really is snark tank's fault which is fun it is 100 you know so what are you gonna do just want to acknowledge that that it was it is what it is i try to get to everyone be patient with me i am special needs i often think about like how many like normal shows are ruined if i by like our toxic remembered how funny it was when i started using it it's less funny now i don't know what happened to it well the guy's voice is kind of like he's like hey i heard you like stone temple pilots or whatever then he's like so i was starting off with something cool or whatever like all right it's like a vaguely it's like a vaguely black effect right right which is very odd because like who is this based on somebody like like is this based on a person or did you just like create a black ai like it's very odd but like he's yeah he goes like he's like i heard you like stone temple pilots yeah this couldn't find a real press release For it So this might be the only release They did Along with a 10 minute video But Arjan Bach Who's the game director of Guerrilla We'll talk about him in a minute He says Today marks a monumental step for Guerrilla As a studio As we announce our new chapter In the Horizon universe Horizon Hunter's Gathering By the way I'm really annoyed They're doing this thing Where they don't use colons You know In their naming conventions These companies are very Very careful about the way They type things Like infamous Lowercase i Lowercase n All capital You know Like They're intentionally not using A colon in this name And it bothers me Horizon Hunter's Gathering This is a rewrite Anyway With the very first ideas That shaped the world of Horizon We dreamed of players Hunting machines together We started with a small group of gorillas Including myself back in the days As design director And began exploring What that could look like Drawing on our experience Cross-progression and cross-play will be available between the PS5 and PC versions, and I like here that they specifically say to avoid the hell diverse drama. It says, by the way, Horizon Hunter's Gathering supports cross-play between PS5 and PC plus cross-progression when you are logged in and save your game using the PlayStation account. So they're getting ahead of that now, which is smart. They say it's early, obviously not coming out this year, it shouldn't come out this year, but I would say next year, based on the amount of time this game has been incubating and now in development.

So I'm very curious to see what you think this came out alongside a 10-minute video that shows the game extensively and interviews people that work on the game. I promise I'll bring up Arjan Bach again. He is the director of this new co-op Horizon game, and he does have Chops and Guerrilla. He was the environment artist on Killzone 2 and Killzone 3.

He was the art director of Killzone Shadowfall, and he was the art director of Zero Dawn. So he didn't work on Forbidden West at all. So he has been working on this for quite some time. All right, Chris, let's hear from you first.

What do you think about Horizon Hunter's Gathering? Again, we knew it existed, but I didn't expect to see it for the first time like this. Yeah, no, for sure. A little shocking.

They kind of surprised an announcement, because this was announced like this morning, right? Yeah, just a little bit before we started recording, so pretty fresh. But, I mean, I don't know. I feel like it looks pretty high quality.

The animation's really high, and every freeze frame looks really curated and cared for, and there's a lot of work in the animation. It's got a little bit of a Fortnite meets Spider-Verse feel, and I don't quite know how I feel about that. I feel like it works better than I thought it would, but also it's not necessarily what I would have liked to see, specifically. As far as the gameplay, I mean, it looks a lot more stylized than Horizon.

There's a repeating GIF in this PlayStation blog post, where a character's just doing straight-up anime shit. So it looks like they're leaning into a bit of a different style with this. We're just zooming back and forth and shit. I don't know.

I'm curious about it. My interest is piqued, and I think I'll definitely give this a shot and give it a try. But I don't know. The visuals are throwing me off.

I guess that's just how multiplayer games look now. But, I don't know. I mean, Colin, you're big on the look of Horizon. You've said multiple times that you think it's one of the most beautiful games that you've ever played.

So when you see this, how do you feel about it? I think it looks awesome. I personally think it's fun and whimsical. I want Horizon mainline games to look like that, but I don't think everything that is in the Horizon universe needs to necessarily have the same art style.

And in fact, I kind of give them... You don't want to give Gorilla too much credit for something we don't really know too much about, but it's kind of cool that they're doing something different, because it would have been very easy for them to not. And I don't mean that from an effort standpoint or a creativity standpoint. I mean that all this shit literally exists in the highest possible quality from Forbidden West.

It will no doubt be in the third mainline Horizon game whenever that comes. Probably a sixth game at this point. So that they didn't dispatch this team and say, all right, well, here are all the assets we have. Here are all the maps.

Or here's these huge maps we have. Use this stuff and make some $40 multiplayer game while we make the third Horizon game. And instead, it seems like what they've done is worked a great deal with at least a major portion of the team. I don't know if all of them at Gorilla, because I think there's probably other things going on there.

But they made this their next real game. So I guess what I'm saying is that there's a vision here. It's actually more expensive than it needed to be. And they would have gotten a probably more positive reveal bump if they actually had just made it look like the original Horizon.

But I'm kind of stoked it doesn't. I like them doing different things. I just don't think all of them work. I don't think the VR game was very good.

I didn't even beat it. Lego Horizon was really a fart in the wind. I mean, it was sensibly a Lego game. But not really.

I mean, and when that Lego Batman game comes out in a few months, that's going to be a real Lego game. And I understand that that's not what Horizon was going to get. But it's like, yeah, it was kind of a waste. So I think people are a little gun shy.

I do think they're overexposing Horizon. I think those are also just two different things. But this specific game, I think, looks sick. Yeah.

I love it. What did you say, Chris? I'm sorry. Oh, sorry.

I do like the way it's shaded. There's particularly some scenes where there's grass. And I think they're doing, like, I think in the beginning of this repeating gif here, the first one. I don't know exactly if this is in the trailer where it is.

But the grass looks really cool. I like the way it looks. I'm just kind of surprised to see it look like this, I guess. And I guess the big question is going to be, like, how does it play?

And how sticky is it? And how deep is it going to be? That remains to be seen. But it's my interest to speak.

I'm curious about it. I like what you said, too, about the anime. It was just a cartoony kind of thing that they're going on with. Obviously, literally.

And again, in that gif where the female hunter attacks, like, that crab-like, or the machine with the crab-like pincers. The way he animates is not machine-like. Right. It's alive.

Like, it just feels and looks different. That's not the way the original Horizon looks. And so I think it's, there's something here. I think, I know.

Yeah. I haven't read too much about the way people feel about it, but I'm positive people are not. That there's, like, a lot of people are not into it. Because everyone's predictable and fucking tired at this point.

And it's getting a little old. But, Dustin, what do you make of Horizon Hunters Gathering? Yeah. I am excited as a Monster Hunter fan.

There's a lot of comparisons to that game, Dauntless. I wasn't into Monster Hunter at the time, so I didn't play that at the time. But there's not too many games in this kind of space. And so what really intrigued me is that they were talking about their mission types.

How there's ones that are going to be very clearly Monster Hunter. Like, you're in the world. You've got to go find the thing that you're hunting. And then you and your teammates go and take out that specific monster.

But there's also, sounds like some kind of wave encounter. And also, part of the longer extended 10-minute video, they talked about something that kind of at least reminded me of a raid. Where you're in those more, like, the place where they make all the machines, the vault. And that sounds really intriguing to me.

To play a raid-like experience that has puzzles and platforming. Where you need to work as a team in order to progress. That sounds pretty cool. In terms of the art style, I think the only gripe I have with it is I don't really like the way the characters themselves look.

I think the world itself, it has kind of a lighter pastel look to it while still being very colorful. So it's not quite as, like, neon-soaked as something like Fortnite. The characters, though, I can take them or leave them, really. I did laugh about the really, really fat girl.

Yeah, I like that she's a tank. I think it's kind of cool, like, the way they... Like, at first I actually was like, uh, what are we doing with this? But then they show, like, a distant shot of her attacking these characters.

And it's like, she... In other words, I don't know if it's body-inclusive as much as, like, this is, like, the tank character. You know? Right.

So it didn't bother me much after that. Yeah. We'll have to wait and see. Yeah, definitely.

I'm really... The most disappointing thing about this to me is the hero design of it. I am sick of hero-based games. And I really...

One of the things... I mean, again, compared to Monster Hunter, sorry. This game is trying to emulate Monster Hunter, clearly. Yeah, obviously.

I love the character creator in that game. And I am disappointed that this game doesn't have a creative character situation. So that's a little bit disappointing. What also intrigued me, Colin, for you in particular, I know we were talking about that you're more open to the idea of playing some of these games multiplayer, but in this 10-minute video, they mentioned you'll be able to play the game single-player.

Yeah, they do. And they say... Yeah, in the write-up as well, they say up to three players. And I think that's going to be really vital, because Horizon...

The Horizon fan base is a single-player fan base. And that was one of the things they said in the video, too, and I really appreciated that. I think it was Jan van der Beek, whatever the guy's name is, who's, like, the lead who took over after Herman left at Gorilla. And he was saying that, like, we are a single-player studio, and we are going to make single-player games.

And it's funny. They're getting smarter. It's like watching a sentient machine, like, so you become more intelligent. You have to get in front of this.

You have to stay in front. You have to just, like, spell all these things. That's not how people know that you're not abandoning things. Oh, and by the way, mention Killzone.

And do the... Like, so it's good. Like, they're getting smarter from that perspective. One other thing, too.

Speaking of Herman, we're seeing what he said a few months back, when he was maybe longer than a few months at this point, when he asked about, like, what happened to Concord, and he said that part of their course correction is that they're going to get players in earlier. And you can clearly see that evident here, where they are doing the beta tests. And as you said, it seems like this game probably won't even come out this year, but people will be playing it this year. And I think that's a super smart decision.

Get people in, see what they like, what they don't like, and you don't have to just, like, bet everything on initial launch of the game without having anyone play it like Concord. So I think that's a good move, and I'm expecting that that will be the case for other PlayStation Live Service games. I'm curious what the monetization model is for this. Will this be a free-to-play game?

Will it have a, I don't know, $40 price tag plus microtransactions? I mean, surely they're going to have microtransactions. That's what they like to do, it seems like that's going to be the thing they do, you know, is the $40 plus microtransactions. That's what Marathon is, right?

And that's what Concord was, that's what Hellliders was, fair games will be that. I don't know what's going to, I don't know what they're doing. I mean, they haven't shut that game down. I mean, that team still exists doing something.

So we just assume that's the model, right? I would personally love to see them make a free-play, but I just don't think they're going to do it, especially for my first-party team. You know, like, it's a big risk, hundreds of millions of dollars probably. Well, it's definitely a nine-figure game, but it is being made in the Netherlands, so it's going to be a little cheaper.

Yeah, I feel like we need to know more about, like, how much content is there. Just to, like, say, is the $40 price tag going to be warranted? Because if you think about Marathon, Marathon is kind of, I mean, it's a one-mode game. And it's $40.

And assuming, I mean, from what we know, that this is the ones you have, technically you'll be able to play single-player. There's multiple mission types, multiple maps. I mean, we haven't played Marathon yet either, but I could see this being $40 and being worth it. But again, we need to wait until we see more.

Yeah, I mean, I think that they, I think Helldiver, well, maybe they'll even figure it out after Marathon and see what happens. And then people's feedback on the, I guess it would be an alpha. And then maybe go from there. But I think they are all about, like, some sort of money up front.

Pay the piper, and then you don't really have to spend any more money, but you could. Like, I played Helldiver 2 for 50 hours, right? I never spent any more money. I could have very easily done so.

They give you a nice way of earning in game currency, and perhaps they'll do the same thing here with Horizon. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, go ahead.

No, I was going to say, like, I think free-to-play, I don't know. I feel like, I feel like somebody must be smart enough to know this. Like, free-to-play for multiplayer is kind of like a double-edged sword because you get a lot of attention, but also, like, the cheating situation gets bad with free-to-play. Like, the $40 price tag, and even just price tag in general, is a pretty good barrier to prevent that kind of thing.

I think Destiny, like, parts of, like, they're really competitive modes. Like, when Destiny went free-to-play piecemeal, they had a lot of cheaters coming to their really competitive mode. They were like, now we're locking this behind the expansion. So I wonder if, oh, but this is going to be, like, cooperative.

There's no competitive, there's no competitive right now. So, like, I don't know. Like, it could go either way. This looks like a premium product, though, to me.

Like, I would expect $40 minimum. Probably even go away with $60, maybe, depending on how much content there is. But $40 is a safe bet. There's something very attractive about the $40 price point.

It's a good price point. Again, I think when you look at it, because it would have been interesting to see what would happen with The Last of Us Online, which I assume would have probably also been $40, but with these particular other games, you're talking about big bites from big, expensive studios and the opportunity cost of utilizing them. Unlike Arrowhead, making Helldivers, repass, contracting, or whatever, so you might want to get more money out of it. I don't know.

But, again, the other side of it is Marathon. Like, they have every reason to squeeze the shit out of that game, because Bungie is such a disaster, and they're losing so much money on the acquisition, but yet they kind of just remain stayed and went with $40 price point, which I respect. But it's pretty good. I was here from the audience, because people wrote in.

I still had a few increase. I will say that some people are into it. I believe a lot of people are not into it. But let's hear from Nick.

Nick wrote in, saying, hey, CCD. As a Horizon and Monster Hunter fan myself, there's always been an inclination to imagine how well-suited the game would be for a Monster Hunter-like take on the game. Despite my positive stance to be positively biased in the exact game that Monster Hunter's gathering is, I find myself largely uninterested. I do think we are getting, how do I put this?

When Borderlands came out and it was cell-shaded, and cell-shaded games would come out, people would say it would look like Borderlands. And I'm like, no, it's cell-shaded. It actually doesn't really look like Borderlands. And Fortnite is becoming a similar thing for me, where a cartoony, simplified art style is not necessarily Fortnite.

To me, and I don't know how you guys feel, you can tell me I'm wrong, I don't mind. I get why people think it's like Fortnite, but I look at it and I'm like, it's really not. It's just cartoony. And you're conflating the whimsy of it with everything being like this one thing, a la Borderlands and cell-shading for a lot of people for years.

Where it's like, you're just holding in on this one factor. And I personally don't, so I'm personally not turned off by the art style. And I don't think, I think there are many things that are much more Fortnite-like, actually. Yeah, yeah.

I mean, I don't think the art style is like, I don't think the art style is like, it's definitely, so I think people use Fortnite as a shorthand for a cartoony, really. Like, I look at this and I do see a little bit of it, but I also see a little bit of Spider-Verse. I see a little bit of, I just see a little bit of like other things as well. But I don't know, it's hard to, it's hard to argue necessarily just because Fortnite is the biggest, it's the biggest thing.

And it's not quite like Borderlands. Fortnite is big, right? But like, Fortnite is like, kind of like, Borderlands, Borderlands, Fortnite, Fortnite is like, it is a, it's so all-encompassing and it is a lot of people's reference points. So a lot of people are going to, it's like whenever somebody's like back in the, like, going to Doom clone, you know what I mean?

This is the first person shooter. Like, we have terms for this. But I don't blame people for like maybe having music reactions to it because when you see, especially when you see an IP that has a distinct style already or that has a particular look to it, and then you see it kind of refracted through a prism of like a different art style like this, it is going to come across as like a Fortnite-ification. You know, like it is going to come across as like, we want to appeal to a lot of people, so we're going to like, we're going to tone down the visuals a little bit, we're going to make it a little bit more expressive.

The other side of that is because Horizon is so realistic looking and so detail oriented, we get to cut down on potentially, you know, system strain, you know, for multiplayer games. It's like, that game probably, it's probably easier to run, a game that's a little more stylized, it's just less details account for it. It's not as big of a deal if things don't, you know, draw distance doesn't apply in the same way. And there's a lot of different tricks to that.

But I, yeah, I don't know. I think we are approaching a point where Fortnite is kind of becoming like the word slop in some way, where it's like, oh, it's like Fortnite, or, oh, that's slop. And it's like, is it? I don't know, maybe a little bit, but not overwhelmingly, in my opinion.

Like, it looks, it kind of looks like Post-A-Booz, like that movie, actually. Which is like Spider-Verse, it looks more like Spider-Verse to me. I posted in our chat here, our friend Sandy posted a direct comparison of Aloy and... Fortnite versus Aloy in this game.

And actually, Aloy looks a lot more cartoony in this game than in Fortnite. Definitely. She definitely looks like a good comparison. I like seeing her.

Just for a moment. I wonder what role she'll play in the game, if any. She's a little midget, just like she was in the VR game. It's so weird.

Sweet Joan Jordan. It said, is Horizon at risk of losing its identity? PlayStation has become very Disney-like with this series. The first one sells well, and in an effort to milk it, sees themselves running it into the ground.

The latest attempt being a Fortnite-looking canon multiplayer game seems like a wasted opportunity to me, considering Zero Dawn was one of the most original concepts I released. Since Rebidden West, I've been increasingly disappointed with the rush in the series, kind of wishing we were getting the Chinese ripoff, especially since the Korean MMO isn't coming to PS5. I still am flummoxed by the whole MMO thing, but it makes more sense even now about why they want to keep them separate, to not flood the zone, although I think you should just... What I assume will happen with the MMO is that if it does well enough on PC, they probably will bring to PS5.

But it might be a wait-and-see approach, and this game's success because it's first party being made by one of the biggest teams is just much more important. I just... I will say this to you, because I agree that they're doing too much with Horizon. I agree.

And I don't think that this is too much, though. It's too bad that the VR game and the Lego game exist. Because if you just remove those... And again, on the other side, it doesn't really matter that they exist.

Like, most of the people play either of those games. You have to have a PSVR 2 to play the Horizon VR game. Most of you don't have one, which is fine. There's really no reason I have a PSVR 2.

And then no one plays... I'm the only person in the world that might play Horizon. Any entire one. So these games exist, but if it's like a forest in the tree...

Or a tree in the forest. You're not even there to hear it. It doesn't matter. And that's kind of what I think people need to focus on more.

It's like, yeah, an overexposure thing hurts the brand generally, but I actually think it's not been overexposed for normal audiences that really actually only have access to Horizon 1 and 2. And you do have access to Lego Horizon as well. So yeah, I think they're getting a little aggressive with it. But I also think people seriously underestimate the popularity of the franchise.

I think people conflate this overwhelming hate for everything on the internet with it translating to real life, and I just think that that's not necessarily true. Zero Dawn was a huge success, but for Ben West was as well. And I just think people think it's something not for them, or they're tired of it, everyone's tired of it. And that it's not for me anymore.

And I'm not exposed to any of it, because I don't have Disney+, and I'm not going to watch it or whatever. So I get it. I get what people's consternation is about this. But at the same time, I don't know that it really matters.

And because it's fairly clear to me that we're not getting Horizon 3 anytime soon, this is totally fine for me, especially as a release next year. I'm thinking of next year. So this year is like Marathon Sarah's Wolverine. Next year would be something like this intergalactic, maybe the Dark Outlaw game or something, or some, I was going to say God of War of San Monaco's game.

So it's going to be a leg of the stool for sure. And I'm rooting for it. I think it looks fun. But I will say that there is a little bit of a...

I went to the video on YouTube for the 10-minute trailer and interview sequence where people can go check it out for themselves. You definitely should make up your own decisions on whether you think it's interesting or not. But the thumbs up to thumbs down is like 6 to 4, something like that. So that would be 3 to 2, I guess, right?

So not as bad as you would. Not great, but still more people liking it than not, which is a little bit of a victory in this day and age, I think. Where it's very easy to thumbs things down, write things off. As with everything that Sony releases, I mean, this is the big thing for intergalactic, in my opinion, is it's going to be all about the game.

Like once you see the game, once people play it, you'll be able to make better decisions on whether you really are into it or not. But I'm personally excited about it. But I love Horizon, so I am biased. Is there anything else you want to say about Guerrilla or Horizon or whatever else?

I guess in some way it is a little bit of a shame that the studio has just been wrapped up into this one franchise. But that's the way it's going for a lot of the Sony first parties as the games take longer to make. They've basically been all in on Horizon when you consider... So Shadowfall comes out 2013.

So around 2013 until now, 13 years. So I would like to see something else from there at some point. I don't know that that's going to happen anytime soon. I'm intrigued by this point that Sweet Jones made, and I saw a lot of other people, that it seems like a wasted opportunity.

I guess the thought behind that is just that if Guerrilla is making this game, then it's taking longer for them to make Horizon 3. Is the thought, right? Right, I mean, I would assume... Let me see.
