4.1 From Source to Spectrum to Ritam
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
A new module begins, with a frank title: the human condition. Having built an understanding of the mind, the group now turns to the questions underneath a whole human life. Why do we suffer? What is health, really? And is there an architecture beneath both, something that holds when life is whole and gives way when life comes apart? To answer, Swamiji introduces the map he has been building toward, the Ritam Wellbeing Framework, drawn in a language a scientist, a doctor or a teacher can stand on without taking a single foreign word on faith. It is built by walking three of the oldest questions a person can ask: who am I, where do I come from, and what holds it all together? You are a spectrum, not a point. What you are runs along a band from the subtle to the solid. At one end is awareness itself, the source, the still point everything arises from. At the other is the world of specific, manifest things, a particular thought, sensation or spoken word. It is a smooth gradient, and the same source-to-manifest pattern repeats at every scale, a galaxy, a heartbeat, a breath, a thought. The body, breath and mind are all real; the awareness at the source-pole is the most truly you, available wherever your attention happens to sit. The clearest image is white light through a prism: the colours were already in the white light, which the prism reveals rather than paints. So the undivided source and the manifest world are not two things but one reality seen two ways.Health, in this map, is a rhythm, not a place. Between source and manifestation there is constant movement in two directions: outward, form unfolding into specifics, and inward, form dissolving back to source, like an exhale. Neither alone is healthy: only-outward burns out, only-inward never lives. Health is the breathing rhythm of the two, and much of what a doctor sees, burnout, insomnia, rumination, is a failure of the return. The principle that holds it all together is Ritam, best translated as right-fittedness, the fitting of things into their proper relationships that makes a coherent universe. Its loss is anṛta, mis-fittedness, the structural description of what medicine calls dysregulation and the traditions call suffering. So the framework is both diagnostic and therapeutic from the very first lesson.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:• Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind• Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
