4.14 : what's the point of space exploration?

This episode is all about SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER. Outer space is technically a wild, untouched expanse of nature. Should our species' interaction with it thus abide by the same rules of care and sustainability as, say, exploring an old growth forest? Is there much to be gained in leaving orbit besides pride?
