Among these missionaries was Addison Pratt, a former whaler who, despite a tumultuous past, had developed a rudimentary understanding of Hawaiian during his travels. After receiving a patriarchal blessing, he and three other missionaries, including Benjamin F. Grouard and Noah Rogers, set sail to preach in Hawaii. Their arduous six-month voyage took them past Australia and eventually to an island south of Tahiti, where they encountered both hospitable reception and challenges, such as the death of one missionary from tuberculosis.Upon reaching Tubuai, the missionaries experienced a warm welcome, leading one to remain there while Addison and the others planned to travel to Tahiti, unaware of the war transpiring there. Instead, they redirected to the Tuamutu Islands. The significance of building strong relationships is highlighted through Addison’s interactions with the Tupoy locals and his missionary endeavors that bridged cultural gaps through language.
