Send us Fan MailLouisa Barnes Pratt played a pioneering role as the first woman to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning her journey in support of her husband Addison Pratt’s mission to French Polynesia in 1844 and joining him in 1850. Facing hardships such as scurvy and the challenges of raising four daughters alone, Louisa’s resilience was evident in her trek from Nauvoo to winter quarters and her subsequent mission work. Upon Addison’s return after six years, the family faced internal conflicts about returning to Polynesia but eventually embarked on a challenging voyage to Tupoy. There, despite language barriers, they engaged in teaching and supporting the local community, with their daughters quickly learning Tahitian. However, political tensions, exemplified by Elder James Brown’s expulsion due to anti-government activities, ultimately forced Addison Pratt and his companions to leave in 1852, entrusting the continuation of their mission work to the Polynesian saints.
