4-24-23: Doctors said he would never walk, so he ran

from SAX IN THE MORNING · host Steve Sax

I would love to hear from you, just send me text and let me know what you think of the podcast.Today I share the story of Glenn Cunningham who was one of the best distance runners of all time. He held the world record in the mile for three years. He held several Olympic and NCAA records at one point. But as a child, doctors told him he would never walk. Cunningham had both legs terribly burned in a fire, and he barely survived and nearly had his legs amputated. Doctors said he would never walk, but never underestimate the will of an 8-year-old. Cunningham taught himself how to walk in his yard holding the fence. As he got stronger he was in terrible pain when he walked, but when he ran the pain went away. And that was the humblest of beginnings for one of the great athletes of the 1930’s.
