4.5 The Inherited Mind: Saṁskāra, Vāsanā, and the Memory of Energy

Here is something you can check this very second. Think back to how your day began. Before the day gave you any reason, something probably arrived: a worry, a low hum of unease, a list assembling itself. You did not summon it, and you will not have to summon it tomorrow either. Today the group looks straight at that uninvited visitor and finds it is not random and not a personal failing. It is a groove, a loop of mental energy worn so deep it now runs itself and fires whenever the right cue arrives. The old word for it is saṁskāra.A saṁskāra is an impression worn into the mind by repetition or intensity until it becomes a self-sustaining loop. It survives years unmaintained, is woken by a cue rather than created by one (so it fires fast), deepens every time it runs, and coexists with many other loops. When many related grooves couple together they form a vāsanā, a broad standing orientation that colours a whole kind of experience, the way a lifetime of resentment can become the lens a person sees through. A saṁskāra fires in a moment; a vāsanā shapes a whole life. These grooves are what the filter is made of, which is why you never meet the world unfiltered. But they are not the enemy: a musician's skill and a kind person's compassion are grooves too. The real question is which grooves serve fit and which feed the drift, and because grooves are made by repetition, they can be remade by repetition.The group refuses to dodge a genuinely deep question: where do these grooves actually live? There are two honest answers. The laboratory account, demonstrable, says they are physical grooves in tissue that end with the brain. The contemplative account, testimonial, says they live in a subtler memory-field of which the brain is the visible screen, and are carried beyond the body. The two agree on what saṁskāras are and do, and diverge only on where they finally reside. Swamiji holds both without flinching, because the practical work is identical either way. The inheritance has three time-modes: the accumulated store, the hand dealt this life, and what you are forming now, and only the third is under your control. That is exactly where human freedom lives: not in choosing the hand, but in playing it.
