4.6 Living in Harmony with Ṛta
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
For several lessons the group has been taking the mind apart, and the last one was sober: the inherited grooves we did not choose. So today the conversation turns deliberately toward the light, asking the prior question we rarely pause on: what does it actually feel like when a life is working, when the body, the mind, the day and our closest relationships are in tune? Swamiji begins not with an idea but with a hand on the heart, and a small demonstration that your body already knows how to find its own coherence the moment you stop forcing it. Then comes the surprise: the Vedic seers named this fitted, flourishing state Ṛta, and modern science, with entirely different instruments, has measured the very same thing, in the heart, the brain, the body clock, even between people singing together.Ṛta is a felt baseline, not a peak, the natural state of a system in tune, approached, lost and returned to across a life. The hand-on-heart practice shows its signature: you do not command the heart, you breathe slowly and place attention, and the heart leans toward the breath on its own. The episode describes what health feels like in four domains, a body that lets its rhythms follow the cycles that hold it, a mind whose inherited reactions inform rather than command, a day that protects its clearest hours and follows the arc of light, and a relationship of two rhythms that slow to each other. None is perfect; all share one direction: less effort to function, more access to what is there.Three ideas from physics illuminate it. Resonance: tune to a thing's natural frequency and it draws energy from the field. Entrainment: coupled rhythms synchronise, like five metronomes on a rocking board falling into unison, or two people's heart rates drifting together in real attention. Coherence: many rhythms in stable step, highly efficient because each part is held by the others. Health is living variability around a steady centre, never a flat line, and breathing at about six breaths a minute locks heart, breath and blood-pressure reflex into one measurable coherent wave. The same fittedness appears at every scale, in nested brain rhythms, in heart cells that beat in unison once they touch, in a choir's synchronised hearts, and in the body clock reset each morning by light. The deep practical law: entrainment is neutral, so you fall into step with whatever holds you. The mind is always tuning to something; there is no neutral. Choosing what to resonate with, the steady over the agitating, the highest source available over the most reactive, is itself a practice, perhaps the most fundamental one.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:• Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind• Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
