Tyranny is the most common form of government throughout human history, with liberty a small flame kept burning by the very few who face assault from the ignorant oppressed as much as by their oppressors. Throughout most of this history it is the moral corruption not merely of leadership, but of the people which guarantees said tyranny. There is real danger in the justifications given for violations of fundamental civil liberties - that we can protect our rights by limiting or stripping them, or by giving special protections to one group over another. When one party wishes to fight opposing tyranny the natural reaction is to conduct their politics in like manner or take another step over the line of law.
