Hij werd begraven in Westminster Abbey, op een prestigieuze plek, tegen het beroemde orgel aan. Hetzelfde orgel waar hij jarenlang zélf op speelde. Tijdens zijn afscheidsdienst klonk begrafenismuziek, door hem zelf gecomponeerd voor de begrafenis van Queen Mary. Net zo toepasselijk. Een respectvol afscheid van een respectvolle componist. Maar… daar zijn wel wat vreemde dingen aan vooraf gegaan. Purcell was pas eind 30 als hij doodgaat. Was hij ziek? Of... was er iets anders aan de hand?
