As is reflected in the episode title, music is currently in permanent free-fall. We have reached a point where much of what we call music does not even incorporate melody or harmony, nor are the “performers” musicians. Part of this statement is nothing new and began when rock n roll began. As an example of this, the so-called king (Elvis) never wrote a single song. But this can be said of many pop-culture figures in our time. Around the end of the Big Band era music and musicianship began a permanent decline, but what is more is the integration of social engineering audibly targeting the young. With improvements in technology, frequencies, back masking and subliminal messaging have become commonplace, among other less-known stupefying techniques. If we look up the definition of music, we get something like the following: 1. an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. 2. the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both. There are other definitions on offer but the older versions usually include melody, harmony, time and often color. One might ask if modern electric devices fit the original meaning of the word “instrument”. If we look at an orchestra the instrument categories are as follows: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion. Some orchestras employ 120 skilled musicians. Suffice it to say that (pop) music in our time does not even require skilled musicians – or instruments as defined by the original meaning. The etymology of the word “instrument” could be shown as follows: *en (in) -Interior or within. *stere- to spread out. *ment- always equates to mind. But as is true of so much in our time, human interaction, skill, craftsmanship and touch are rarer every day as Electronica-Robotica-Darkness conquers the world.
