Always be in love with a soul, not a face. Those are words from a Thai Buddhist monk, but it’s easier said than done. What is one’s “soul” anyway? My image of a soul is similar to a spirit. It’s something even deeper than your heart and mind. Some Japanese people think that your soul is your “true essence” which is established before your birth, and continues on after your death. I think that even when someone seems to fall in love with a person’s face, there is actually more to it than that. The way someone talks, their facial expressions, body language, and the way they treat others can make a person more attractive. Recently I’ve been really into some light-hearted romantic comedies from Thailand. I think I end up really liking the actors because of the characters they play. I love the story that the characters are in, and I think that shapes the way I feel about the actors. I can totally understand how many people fall in love with actors from these kinds of shows. That made me wonder, is every kind of love imaginary love in your mind? We shouldn’t live our lives just to fulfill other people’s expectations. As long as we live, we are changing little by little, so I guess true love is constantly learning about someone and growing together. If that’s what the monk meant when he said you should love a soul, then I think he was right.
