畫說漢字/圖解《說文解字》/1000個漢字的故事/東漢許慎原著表（biǎo）“表”是个象形字，本义是在外面穿的衣服。古人穿衣很讲究，夏季穿“衣”，冬季穿“裘”。他们所穿的裘衣，大多毛朝外，出门时外面还要再加一件外套。这件外面穿的衣服就称为“表”。古陶文的“表”字，上部是“毛”，下部是“衣”，表示将衣服套在裘毛之上。小篆的“表”，将“毛”字放到了“衣”的中间，字义没有变化。后来，“表”字引申为表面、外部，与“里”相对，如最虚伪的人就是那些“表里不一”的人。（身上的最外一层衣服，代表了人的外部形象。）
