455. In Flanders Field

from History of North America · host History of North America

World War One was a global conflict whose horrendous battlefields consumed a generation of young men on Europe’s Western Front. One such man was Canadian medical doctor, poet, and soldier John McCrae. His experiences on the battlefield moved him to compose “In Flanders Fields” which became the most famous poem of The Great War. Moina Michael, an American woman moved by the poem, was inspired to adopt the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who died in the War to end all Wars—her life's work advocating for veterans' welfare as "The Poppy Lady," spread this remembrance movement throughout North America, parts of Europe, and beyond.  In Flanders Fields books & souvenirs at https://amzn.to/4hRLO8W  WWI books & souvenirs available at https://amzn.to/494Lp0u  ENJOY Ad-Free content, Bonus episodes, and Extra materials when joining our growing community on https://patreon.com/markvinet  SUPPORT this channel by purchasing any product on Amazon using this FREE entry LINK https://amzn.to/3POlrUD (Amazon gives us credit at NO extra charge to you).  Mark Vinet's video channel: https://youtube.com/c/TIMELINE_MarkVinet  Mark's HISTORICAL JESUS podcast at https://parthenonpodcast.com/historical-jesus               Website: https://markvinet.com/podcast  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mark.vinet.9 Twitter: https://twitter.com/MarkVinet_HNA   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/denarynovels  Mark's books: https://amzn.to/3k8qrGM  Audio credits: The Daily Poem podcast with Sean Johnson presented by Goldberry Studios-John McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" May 26, 2025; Red Poppies-Flowers of Remembrance (Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds at rareseeds.com; A Forest Melody by Tellsonic, Awakening Wilderness);  Audio excerpts reproduced under the Fair Use (Fair Dealings) Legal Doctrine for purposes such as criticism, comment, teaching, education, scholarship, research and news reporting.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
