46. Decluttering the Heart-Heavy Stuff

from The Habit Thrive Podcast ~ Self Care Habits, Mindfulness & Wellness Routines for Women 50 & Beyond · host Lorrie Mickelson, Habits & Self Care

The Habit Thrive Podcast wants to give a  shout out to all of the wonderful mothers and daughters out there. Happy Mother’s Day!🌷 Welcome to another episode for the month of May, where we are embracing the task of decluttering our lives, homes, bodies and minds. Today, on episode #46, we’re going to be tackling the tough, heart-heavy stuff. But, first, we are going to ease into our decluttering with some lighter stuff.😉 Last week, we started things off with a peek at how discovering your Dosha can give you insight into your habits around decluttering. Knowing your Dosha - Kapha, Pitta or Vata (like me!) - can help you know when, where & how to declutter. And, once you know, the next step is to get started! If you’re not quite ready to tackle some of the heavier decluttering, try setting a timer for 10-15 minutes and working on a smaller project instead. Organize and clean your fridge Empty your desk drawer and replace everything so it’s easy to locate Pull your clothes from the closet and box up the heavy winter things to make room for summer items Pull weeds to refresh your garden and prepare for new growth Even the smallest improvement can bring about a fresh, new perspective on your surroundings and improve your mood. While a smaller, lighter decluttering task is easily approachable, many of us have a harder time tackling the heavier projects. Maybe your garden shed has been accumulating random items as an overflow space over the winter. Or you may have boxes upon boxes of papers, photos, knickknacks and other items you inherited from a family member. Sometimes, standing in front of a bear of a project like these seems very daunting … and that’s totally normal! We can help eliminate some of the stress that arises by approaching these projects in ways that make them more manageable. (Remember those Doshas?) Vatas - Avoid getting distracted by setting intentions and making a plan for your project. I like to use my journal for this. Pittas - Take a Saturday to empty the whole shed, clean it, organize it … done! Kaphas - Invite someone (family or friend) to join you in going through your boxes. Share stories and memories along the way, and just take it one box at a time. Whether your decluttering task is an easy one or a big project, play with different approaches. There is no one-size-fits-all way to declutter! For now, I encourage all you mothers out there to enjoy your weekend. You deserve it! Lorrie xoxox Loving the show? Let’s connect!
