And when you're first starting out you'll likely be approached to donate your time and services. You might choose to work with a charities because you're passionate about a particular cause, you'll get some publicity out of it, to meet new clients, to feel good, or to get a little bit of a tax break. However, photographing charity events might not be great portfolio-building exercises. Instead, when working with charities you need to consider how you'll make money in the long run. It sounds greedy, but you can absolutely be charitable while also building your business.
