47 -- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act in Action

from The Perio Patient Podcast · host Benjamin Young

We know it as HIPAA which really doesn't help me that much because I then think it spells out HIPPA. Of course, when we can't spell it, it then becomes difficult to figure out what it stands for. I share two recent HIPAA violations in order to help us understand what it is meant to protect. The first article I share talks about a breach of the information of an insurance company by hackers that ultimately cost the company $6.85M in fines. The other article resulted in fines to a hospital because they failed to release medical records to a child patient's mother in a timely manner.
