The Chinese have made a move towards a concept of Fortress China which means that the priority of state decision-making should favor nationalism and prioritize programs that ensure the Chinese people are protected and have energy independence. They also worked hard to fortify its supply lines, much like during wartime. Could America make the same move and shrink the empire before it crumbles outright? Doubtful, but there would be some massive benefits to finally closing down most of the thousand military bases around the world and closing the southern flank.
