#48: Bridgerton (Netflix) through a sex-positive lens: sex ed, purity culture, and choice

I share my reflections on Netflix’s Bridgerton (four seasons completed, renewed for a fifth) as a 42-year-old, 2026 sex-positive educator who normally wouldn’t watch an 1800s high-society romance, but loved it and has watched it twice. I talk about how the show is an escapist fantasy with familiar “Disney” tropes, then focus on the sexual and social threads that stood out: the near-total absence of sex education for women (including confusion about pregnancy and orgasms), strict purity rules and fear of reputational ruin for women, and a stark double standard where men freely use prostitutes. I also note depictions of premarital sex, threesomes, orgies, and different rules for widows, plus early marriage, dowries, and women being valued mainly as wives and incubators.
