48. Give Continuing Education Its Due

It goes by many names—continuing education, lifelong learning, vocational education, and extension curriculum, to name a few.  Why so many labels?  Because continuing education by any other name serves many masters in postsecondary education. It is composed variously by truncated academic curricula, job training, and credentials including certificates, licenses, badges, and short community-based courses.  Want a certificate in accounting?  Check the continuing ed catalog.  How about a cooking class?  Yep, same catalog, different page. Continuing education units (not credits) get no love from accrediting bodies or the real “academic” community in colleges and universities. Why is this, and what can be done about it?  Listen in.
