48 - Honoring the Kohen (2)

Rav Shimon Schwab met with the Chofetz Chaim who told him that it's a pity he's not a Kohen because he won't be able to work in the Beis HaMikdash when it comes. The reason why only kohanim can serve in the temple is due to the difficult choice their ancestors made during the episode of the golden calf. The great stature that Kohanim have is the ability to atone for the Jewish people and to create peace between them and their Creator. Selected Writings: by Rav Shimon Schwab Tanna D'vei Eliyahu 31 כך יעשה האדם שלום בין כל אדם לחבירו ובין איש לאשתו וכן היה עושה אהרן הכהן שהיה מתכוין ועושה שלום בין ישראל לאביהם שבשמים ובין ישראל לחכמים ובין חכם לחבירו ובין ישראל לחבירו ובין איש לאשתו ועליו הוא אומר (ישעיה ג) אמרו צדיק כי טוב כי פרי מעלליהם יאכלו ועליו נאמר (ישעיה נו) כה אמר ה' שמרו משפט ועשו צדקה וגו'. הקדוש ב"ה שהוא בוחן לבות וכליות היה אומר לאהרן אתה נתכוונת לטובה ועשית שלום ביני ובין בני ישראל אני מוציא ממך בנים שמכפרים על ישראל בכל שנה ושנה וקוראין עליהם שלום בכל יום ויום ויאמרו להם (במדבר ו) יברכך ה' וישמרך יאר ה' פניו אליך ויחנך ישא ה' פניו אליך וישם לך שלום.
