På 1800-talet var Japan gjennomgripande buddhistisk. Så vart nasjonen audmjuka av USA i 1868. Då bestemde japanarane seg for å gjeninnføre religionen dei hadde hatt før verdsreligionen kom, i eit patriotisk krafttak – og klarte det, på eit vis. I 1864 opplevde danskane ei liknande nasjonal audmjuking i krigen mot Preussen. Korleis ville Danmark og Norden vore i dag dersom danskane hadde gått same vegen som japanarane?
