49. TÁR (2022) dir. Todd Field

from The Movies · host Daniel Berrios

TÁR is titled after Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), world-famous composer and conductor, an icon in the Western classical music sphere. This story follows her fall from grace. It's less a "fall" and more of Tár circling the drain made from the slippery consequences of her fucked-up actions. On Twitter, I called it a "darkly comedic egomaniacal excursion to the humble pie factory," which, as I type this, conjures the image of Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka shrieking in the LSD hell tunnel. Now, imagine that shriek internalized and viciously stifled, and that resembles Cate Blanchett's face throughout this movie. It's a wild one today, folx.---Follow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdFinancially support the podcast via the tip jar!
