from Maplewood Baptist Church | Martinsburg, WV
In this message, “Unfailing Things,” from Philippians 4:13, we are reminded that everything in this sin-cursed world is declining, failing, and falling apart, but God has given His people truths that never fail. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Jesus also said in John 15:5, “Without me ye can do nothing.” Without Christ, we can do nothing. Through Christ, we can do all things according to His will and purpose. The sermon begins by pointing out that we live in a failing world. Bodies age, health fails, houses need repair, cars break down, and everything around us tends toward decay. The reason is sin. Because of sin, mankind faces sickness, pain, aging, death, and separation from God. No person can save himself by religion, good works, church membership, baptism, or personal righteousness. The only thing a sinner can do with sin is be forgiven. That forgiveness is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:22 says, “Without shedding of blood is no remission.” Jesus shed His blood on the cross, died, was buried, and rose again so sinners could be forgiven and made right with God. Pastor explained that faith means truly trusting Christ, not merely saying we believe. Just as a person sits on a pew trusting it to hold them, a sinner must depend fully upon Jesus Christ for salvation. In the midst of this broken world, the Bible gives us unfailing truths to rest in. First, the Lord’s compassion fails not. Lamentations 3:22 says, “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” God proved His compassion by sending His Son to die on the cross. The cross was not a vacation; it was a mission. Jesus came to redeem the lost. God’s compassion also reaches into the hurts, burdens, and sorrows of His people. Sometimes God removes the trial, and sometimes He carries us through it. Even when we do not understand what He is doing, we can trust that His compassion has not failed. Second, the Lord’s promises fail not. 1 Kings 8:56 reminds us that not one word of God’s good promise has failed. God promises salvation to those who repent and believe, rest to His people, His presence in the earthly walk, eternal life to the saved, and judgment to those who reject Christ. If God has promised it, He will do it. Because God is faithful to His promises, believers are called to hold fast without wavering. Hebrews 10:23 says, “for he is faithful that promised.” Christians should follow Jesus, resist temptation, depend on the Holy Spirit, fulfill their responsibilities, and live according to God’s Word. Third, the Lord’s faithfulness fails not. Lamentations 3:23 says, “They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” God does not change. He is holy, righteous, good, just, true, merciful, and compassionate. Everything God does is consistent with His perfect character. Because God is faithful, believers can trust Him in every season of life. Circumstances change, children grow up, people age, and the world shifts around us, but God remains the same. He knows what tomorrow holds, and He is faithful to do what is right. This message also gives a clear gospel invitation. Salvation is not found in baptism, church membership, giving money, religious activity, or trying to be good. A person must be born again by receiving Jesus Christ as Savior. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God…” If you do not know for sure that you have eternal life, settle that today. 1 John 5:13 teaches that you can know that you have eternal life through Jesus Christ. For believers, the challenge is to thank God for His unfailing compassion, His unfailing promises, and His unfailing faithfulness, and to walk faithfully with Him in a failing world.
