The group now holds the whole map: four doorways gathered into one chain of ascent. Today Swamiji lifts the floor and shows what has been underneath the whole time, drawing a line between two things that are easy to confuse: the mind running along in time, which the practices have been steadily setting in order, and the awareness in which that whole running is happening. The first is genuine flourishing and the main thing the course set out to deliver. The second is something the practices have quietly been uncovering all along, not by adding anything, but by lowering the noise until what was always there can be noticed.Everything the practices have worked on is the mind running in time, and setting that stream in good order is genuine flourishing, the course's main and sufficient deliverable. But there is a second reading of the very same experience: the silent awareness in which the whole stream is happening, the screen on which the film plays, like a melody heard note by note versus the deeper ground of frequencies it arises from. You do not produce this awareness; you stop drowning it out. As the practices quiet the stream, the noise floor drops and what was always present becomes noticeable, often as a gap between thoughts felt to contain a quiet presence, not just an absence. Swamiji then lays out the old map of the inner ascent, a central channel and stations along the way, drawing on Sri Ramakrishna's direct account of the opening heart where one sees light, the throat, the brow where the Divine is seen as through a glass partition, and the crown where the partition dissolves, held as an experiential map rather than literal anatomy. Then he does something unusual for a teacher: he marks precisely where his own map stops, and why any map must stop there. The final source cannot be put on the map because maps and concepts are ways of grasping objects, and the awareness pointed to is the very thing doing the grasping. As the Upanishad's paradox puts it, it is unknown to those who claim to know it, and known to those who do not claim to. The doctor helps show what brain science can and cannot reach: real measurable correlates exist, the self-referential chatter network quiets in experienced meditators, but no instrument can ever detect the awareness in which all measuring happens, like asking what is north of the North Pole. The whole ascent, in the tradition's view, is consciousness waking up as you, not something happening to you or an upgrade you achieve. The course is a staircase, genuinely built for climbing but never to be mistaken for the roof, yet made of the same material as the roof, so the one climbing has been within the destination all along.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:• Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mind• Advanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mindAlso available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
