Is quitting on principle the right thing to do?

Is the UK education system fit for purpose?

How fast is change?

In this week's 5 Big Questions interview we talk to social entrepreneur, trainer and former head teacher KIT MESSENGER

Known for:

  • Co-director - Changing Chances
  • Former Headteacher - Manor Field Primary School
  • Teaching Fellow - University of Sussex (UK)

The Big 5 Questions:

  1. How do you measure the impact of what you do?
  2. How should people/businesses be preparing for the future?
  3. How do we build the workforce we need for that future?
  4. How do you use creativity to solve problems?
  5. How do you collaborate?

Key quotes:

"A person can shift their thinking and then they can shift in terms of their skills and behaviour. Then they can start operating differently with a child, speaking to them differently, supporting them differently. But the impact for the child won't be straight away, because they've got to embed. Neural pathways take time to build and strengthen."

"Some people can work outside their principles for a long time and seem to survive, and some people can't."

"I had this naive belief that it could create this momentum and things might change."

"When they know that you're doing something because you really, truly love it and you've got their children's best interests truly at heart, you get a different value system going through a community, going through an organisation."

"What kind of society, neighbourhoods, workplaces, do we really want in the end? If you look at it in terms of what you're trying to shift, change and create in the end, it helps you to think through a much longer-term thought process on what the right skills would be and knowledge would be."

The Grand Inquisitor (dramatic reading) Fyodor Dostoyevsky The Grand Inquisitor is a parable told by Ivan to Alyosha in Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov (1879–1880). Ivan and Alyosha are brothers; Ivan questions the possibility of a personal, benevolent God and Alyosha is a novice monk. The Grand Inquisitor is an important part of the novel and one of the best-known passages in modern literature because of its ideas about human nature and freedom, and because of its fundamental ambiguity. In the tale, Christ comes back to earth in Seville at the time of the Inquisition. He performs a number of miracles (echoing miracles from the Gospels). The people recognize him and adore him, but he is arrested by Inquisition leaders and sentenced to be burnt to death the next day. The Grand Inquisitor visits him in his cell to tell him that the Church no longer needs him. The main portion of the text is the Inquisitor explaining to Jesus why his return would interfere with the mission of the church. (Summary by Wikipedia)Ca Tales From the Citadel Miguel Angel Perez Garcia As Rick and Morty prepare to go to Atlantis, they're interrupted by a Rick and Morty pair looking for donations to the Citadel Redevelopment fund. Our Rick and Morty refute the possibility of donation with hostility, pointing out that our Rick was the one to destroy it in the first place, and the pair leave. Speaking of Souls Metropolitan Tabernacle The deeper things of life are so easily crowded out today. Here at the Metropolitan Tabernacle we cater for the needs of the soul. True fulfilment and happiness depends on knowing who we are, and knowing the Lord, our Creator. Don’t let yourself be swept away, programmed and ruled by the shallow things of materialism and hedonism. We need Him and one day we must give account to Him. We’ve presented a collection of material here to help you. Do investigate the facts of the Christian faith, and the possibility of walking with God.
