5: Deobrat Mishra

Deobrat Mishra is an 11th generation musician hailing from the Benares Gharana. He plays sitar, surbahar and is a composer. Deobrat learned under his father, the renowned Pandit Shivnath Mishra. Deobrat's ability to intertwine Indian classical music with jazz and other styles can be heard in his Indian/Jazz ensemble "Trio Benares." I feel lucky to know Deobrat personally and to have been able to spend time with him in India. He shares wonderful perspectives on his upbringing in Hindustani music and how he continues to find new inspiration within this ancient tradition.
