5. Providing Culturally-Rooted Care and Paying for More School After School (ft. Felicia Segura, LPC)
from Therapy Tea: Demystifying the Mental Health Profession · host Jazmin Crookes, LPC and Karen Jennett, LPC
This week Jazmin learned what it’s like to experience a huge caseload jump - like from 5 to 30 clients in less than two weeks! Jazmin shares how the initial rapport building phase of therapy work can be the most emotionally draining, especially when that’s 100% of what you’re doing because all of your clients are new, and how her self-care routine has had to undergo a complete and total overhaul as a result.Today we’re talking with Felicia Segura. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling with a concentration in Marriage, Family and Couples, also from Texas State University. She currently works for Prickly Pear Therapy and Training in Austin, Texas as a Clinical Therapist where she focuses on providing culturally-rooted care to individuals, couples, and adolescents. With Felicia we discuss the challenges in working at Child Protective Services where she spent over 10 years of her career as an Investigator, a Case Worker, and a Kinship Development Specialist. We discuss her graduate school experiences of working full-time throughout and having to figure out on her own all of the specifics of licensing and transitioning into the actual profession of being an LPC.We talk a lot with Felicia about how she connects with and explores the impacts of culture on the mental health field and dig into her passion for working with clients from a culturally-rooted perspective. One big thing we learned from talking with Felicia is that culturally-rooted care is all about having an understanding that culture plays a role in every aspect of someone’s life.Resources mentioned: Institute of Chicana/o/x Psychology and Community Wellness: https://www.razapsych.org/ Latinx Therapists Network: https://latinxtherapy.com/ Black Behavioral Health Network: https://www.blackbehavioralhealthnetwork.com/ The Giver by Lois Lowry Prickly Pear Therapy and Training Website: https://pricklypeartherapy.com/ Prickly Pear Therapy and Training Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/300579170504083/prickly-pear-therapy-and-training/ Thank you so much for listening!
