5 Signs Your Past Is Still Shaping Who You Are
from Flight to Fulfilment with Ratika Seth · host Ratika Seth
Send us Fan MailHave you ever described yourself by saying:“I just don’t trust people easily.”“I’ve always been an overthinker.”“I’m the strong one. I don’t need anyone.”“I hate asking for help.”“I’m just not good at relationships.”After saying these things for years, they begin to sound like facts about your personality. But what if some of them aren’t personality traits at all? What if they are old ways of protecting yourself that have been with you for so long, they now feel like part of who you are?Maybe you became fiercely independent because there was a time when depending on someone ended in disappointment.Maybe you learned to keep everyone happy because conflict once felt threatening.Maybe you became guarded because being vulnerable didn’t always feel safe.Maybe you became the strong one because there simply wasn’t anyone else to carry you. These responses may have made sense at the time. The problem begins when something you once learned to do becomes something you believe you permanently are.Hello beautiful soul,Welcome back to another honest and deeply reflective episode of the Flight to Fulfillment Podcast, where we explore emotional awareness, self-worth, identity, and the hidden patterns that quietly influence the way we experience ourselves and our lives.I’m your host, Ratika Seth, Life Enhancement Coach and founder of the Freedom Divas Hub, a community where women reconnect with themselves, rebuild self-trust, and create lives rooted in freedom, self-respect, and conscious choice.Today, we’re exploring a question I find incredibly powerful:How much of the person you call “me” is actually you—and how much was shaped by what you had to learn along the way?Of course, our past influences us. Our families, relationships, experiences, disappointments, losses, successes, and environments all contribute to the person we become. But sometimes an emotional response gets repeated so often that we stop recognising it as a response. It becomes an identity. You stop saying, “I find it difficult to trust because I’ve been hurt before,” and start saying, “I’m just not a trusting person.”You stop saying, “I learned to handle everything myself,” and start saying, “I’m extremely independent.”You stop saying, “Conflict makes me uncomfortable,” and start saying, “I’m just someone who hates confrontation.”And there is an important psychological difference between those two ways of seeing ourselves. When we believe something is simply “who I am,” we are far less likely to question it.We build our choices around it. We defend it. Sometimes we even become proud of it.The woman who learned never to need anyone may become proud of being fiercely independent, while quietly struggling to receive support. The woman who learned to read everyone else’s moods may describe herself as highly sensitive, while constantly taking responsibility for how everybody around her feels. The woman who learned to stay silent to avoid conflict may call herself easy-going, while carrying years of things she never said.None of this means every personality trait comes from a painful experience. And it certainly doesn’t mean we need to analyse every part of ourselves looking for something to fix.It simply means some patterns deserve a second look.Because perhaps the better question isn’t:“Why am I like this?”Perhaps it is:“When did I learn to be this way—and do I still need to be?”That question creates possibility.Because something you learned can also be reconsidered.Something that once protected you doesn’t have to control you forever. And changing it doesn’t mean rejecting the woman you used to be.Perhaps she had very good reasons for becoming strong, guarded, accommodating, hyper-independent, or constantly prepared. You can honour what those patterns once did for you without allowing them to make every decision for the woman you are today. So in this episode, we’re exploring 5 signs your past may have quietly become part of your personality, how old protective patterns can become mistaken for identity, and how to begin discovering who you are when you’re no longer living by rules written in an earlier chapter of your life.More Power To All!Follow me onInstagram Facebook YoutubeLinkedInFor any information, write to me on [email protected] know more, visit my website www.ratikaseth.comMuch Gratitude!Ratika Seth
