My name is Tana Aleraj and I'm an academic and career resource advisor in the Center for Success at State Xavier University. I would like to welcome you to our Career Talk podcast series. Today, we will be discussing five things a recent graduation note. One conducting the job search, think BRAT, G-R-A-D-S.

G, get to know your values and what you are looking for in a company and a role. Where you end up working right after you graduate from college may not be your forever job, but you do want to make sure that you enjoy the work you do and your work environment. You will be the spending majority of your day there, so while you are pursuing the job search, be sure to know the characteristics and attributes you are looking for in a work setting. You also want to be certain that there are possible areas for growth and professional development to ensure that you are improving the skills and talents that secured you the job in the first place.

Understanding what you are looking for in a role and a company will make the job search much less stressful and will create a path more helpful to long-term career success. Our research. Researching the company and the job role are critical to the job search. Going into an interview, you must know a lot regarding the organization and how you set the role to excel in the company.

It is important to stay up to date on company trends, core values, and their overall mission. Search through the company's website and social media pages to stay up to date on new projects that are launching or new initiatives that are taking place. Being knowledgeable and passionate about the company will set you apart from other applicants. A.

Adjust and tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific company. When conducting the job search, it is important to view the job description and job qualifications to ensure that your resume and cover letter reflects the aspects. Make sure that the duties displayed on your resume correlate with the job description and key terms are emphasized throughout. Employers only take about 30 seconds reviewing your resume, so it is critical to present your experience in a clear and concise manner.

If asked for a cover letter, please utilize the opportunity to emphasize to the employer the research that you conducted on the company and how well your skills and attributes would benefit the vacancy in their company. D. Determine who your network is and utilize them. An incredible aspect of college is the community that you build around you.

When going through the job search, please be sure to utilize all the resources your university has to offer. You can reach out to fellow peers, alum, faculty, and staff for career help. You could also use LinkedIn or other job platforms to reach out to individuals in your desired career field and ask them about their career journey. For example, on LinkedIn, you can reach out to an employee in your desired field via direct message and state the following.

Introduce yourself, express interest in the field, and ask some tips of how to strengthen your application. Leverage social media and technology to your benefit to create professional connections that can open so many professional doors for you. S. Start interview preparation as soon as possible.

Please go into an interview fully prepared to answer any questions that may be asked. Prepare yourself for general questions, scenario-based questions, as well as questions specific to your industry. Practice your answers out loud with multiple people ranging from a trusted career advisor to a friend. Practicing your answers over and over again will cause you to feel more confident when you conduct the real interview and be prepared for the majority of questions asked.

Also, you can record yourself answering the questions to hear how you sound and to view how you are presenting yourself. This would allow you to fix any mistakes to better prepare for the real interview. Research and preparation will ensure that you excel in each aspect of the job search.
