And, I’m with you if you are wondering to yourself, “what kind of name is that?” Hers is a story buried smack dab in the middle of the old testament, and her name is only mentioned once throughout all of it. Gomer was one of those forgotten girls - the kind everyone had given up on, the kind other girls loved to hate. The only thing we really know about her is that she was a prostitute and she couldn't seem to break out of that world. In fact, when she is first introduced to us in the book of Hosea, we learn that she is a prostitute before we even learn her name. To everyone around her, that’s who she was, nothing more. Her story gets interesting when God tells the prophet Hosea to take a promiscuous, sinful girl, a girl who was an outcast and a rebel, as his wife.
