50. CAREN Act - San Francisco & Berkeley Initiatives w/ Hon. Shamann Walton & Hon. Kate Harrison

from The Legal Lens Podcast · host Angela Reddock-Wright

The Legal Lens show is back, clothed in its brand new jingle by Jayy Starr and our updated design! I am excited to welcome in the KBLA TALK 1580 studio two policy leaders who will help us dissect the 2020 CAREN Act of San Francisco and a recent similar ordinance passed by the City of Berkeley, California City Council: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐨𝐧 As the first Black man serving as President of the Board of Supervisors for the County of San Francisco, Supervisor Shamann Walton 華頌善 is the initiator of the CAREN Act, also known as the Caution Against Racial and Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act introduced and passed in San Francisco in 2020. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 Councilmember Kate Harrison comes from three generations of women activists, fighting for justice and equity. As the Vice Mayor for the City of Berkeley, CA City Council, Harrison is the initiator of the ordinance that would expand the current Berkeley municipal code outlawing false reports to the police to specifically ban reports based solely on discriminatory reasons. The ordinance would also allow people to pursue civil action, such as seeking damages. We’ve got a lot to talk about!
