On today’s episode, we are moving into our theme for June - Summer Movement - by talking about the WTF of walking. W - Why T - Technique F - Frequency Your why keeps you motivated (and motivates you to restart a period of being unmotivated due to things like sickness, work, travel, or even weather). The why consists of: Physical Reasons: Maybe your doctor recommended you start walking in an effort to improve your heart health, lower your blood pressure. You may find that walking helps ease back and joint pain. Or maybe you are planning a trip that includes a lot of walking and you want to work on your endurance. Mental Health Reasons: A walk is an opportunity to work on our breathing exercises and enjoy nature around us, which is a natural stress reliever. You can even find walking meditations to follow and use your walking to eliminate the chatter in your brain that may be bringing stress into your life. Sleep Aid Reasons: Walking in the evening can help you relax and expend some of your energy from the day. But walking in the morning also helps, as being in the morning sun increases serotonin, which aids in melatonin production. The technique of your walking habit involves: How you breathe What shoes and clothes you wear Whether you start with stretches or just start slow For your frequency, you should try to plan your walking habit in whatever way works for you. We go on a walk in the evenings, but some people prefer morning or lunchtime walks. You can go on one longer walk or 2 or 3 shorter ones. You don’t even have to walk every day if you’re not ready for that. What’s most important is that you set a goal or schedule and work on making it a habit. Now lace up your walking shoes, and let’s go! Lorrie xoxox Ramp Up Your Spring/Summer Walking: Whether you’re a seasoned walker looking to spice things up, or you walk occasionally and are looking for some motivation to make walking part of your daily routine, you will find some helpful tidbits in this booklet.
