51. Should I Be Ramping Up My Walking Habit?

from The Habit Thrive Podcast ~ Self Care Habits, Mindfulness & Wellness Routines for Women 50 & Beyond · host Lorrie Mickelson, Habits & Self Care

Should you be ramping up your walking?🤔 This is the question we are exploring today on Episode #51 of the Habit Thrive Podcast. The answer is going to depend all on the why of your walking. Last week, we talked about some examples of the why: Physical reasons like improving heart health, lowering blood pressure or easing back and joint pain. Mental health reasons like relieving stress and using walking meditations to eliminate the chatter in your brain. Sleep aid reasons like helping you relax at the end of the day and being in the morning sun to increase serotonin. But you could also walk for social reasons like spending time with family or friends away from electronics and daily life distractions. Or maybe you need to walk because, like me, you have a dog that requires a walk at least once a day. If you haven’t already, I want you to take a moment today - right now, in fact - to think about your why. Your why gets you out the door on those rainy days, keeps you going when you just don’t want to go any more and works with your walking habit to have you consistently benefitting from hitting your goals. Once you have your why, your next step is to take a look at the walking habit you already have and see if you are accomplishing your goals. A good baseline for a walking habit is 30 minutes a day at least 5 times a week. If you’re not quite there yet, I suggest setting your sights on that goal and increasing your walking until you are consistently hitting that mark. The good news is that simply getting this baseline will go a long way toward achieving the why you choose for yourself! And once you get to the baseline (or if you’re already there), take a peek at my Ramping Up Your Spring/Summer Walking eBook. It’s full of tips and ideas on how to make your walk more effective and more rewarding! 🤗 And the best part is that it’s free! Check it out, and I can’t wait to hear how your walking habit is changing your life for the better!
