52. All MOM crimes are not created equal: Laura Browder, Shaina Bell, and Krystin Lisaius

from Pink Collar: A True Crime Podcast · host Pink Collar Pod

After a few technology mishaps, we're back with a brand new episode! This week we explore the cases of three moms, Laura Browder, Shaina Bell, and Krystin Lisaius. You've probably heard of the woman who was arrested for child abandonment while interviewing for a job. Laura Browder was unable to find childcare for her two young children. She brought them with and had them sit at a table that was within her line of sight at all times. After her interview, Laura was arrested for abandoning her children. Similarly, Shaina Bell left her children in her hotel room while she worked at her job down the street. Shaina was working to get the money to provide more stable housing for her family. She had arranged to have someone check on her kids every hour. The children's father was upset about this arrangement and called the police, resulting in Shaina getting arrested for child endangerment. We compare the treatment of Laura and Shaina, two black women, to that of Krystin Lisaius. Krystin and her husband, Somchai, both worked for local new stations. One morning, Krystin saw her child was limp and unconscious after breastfeeding. They took their child to the hospital and kept refusing a toxicology screen. Eventually, medical professionals discovered the baby had cocaine in its system. Krystin and Somchai were arrested but received a light sentence of community service.
