52. Tweaking our Strength Habits to Get Stronger

from The Habit Thrive Podcast ~ Self Care Habits, Mindfulness & Wellness Routines for Women 50 & Beyond · host Lorrie Mickelson, Habits & Self Care

Now that we have our walking habits in place - or at least in progress - we are going to increase our benefits by adding some strength training to our routine. And, no, I don’t mean getting on the bench press at the gym or swinging kettlebells (unless that’s your jam, in which case go for it!!). I’m talking about simple exercises that will strengthen the specific muscles we need to achieve our personal goals. But, first thing’s first. Before you begin any strength training routines, it is important that you check with your healthcare providers (primary care physician, physiotherapist, chiropractor, etc.) to see if you have any health issues or conditions that should be considered. They can help you determine the best way to safely approach your strength training. Once you have the go-ahead from your provider, it’s time to consider your goals: Being able to lift heavy bags of soil for the garden with ease Moving your walk from flat pavement to hilly trails Doing housework with less back pain Lifting yourself into a boat or lifting a canoe over your head Whatever your goal, write it down, and then consider when you want to achieve this goal. By the end of summer? Before a trip you’re taking in the fall? Before the end of the year? Putting a timeline on it gives you that goal to work toward and makes putting your habit into place a lot easier. Finally, figure out which muscles need to be strengthened in order to achieve your goal. If you want to lift those pots and bags of soil in the garden, you’ll need to strengthen your back, legs and glutes. If you want to be able to pull yourself up onto the boat or kayak in the lake this summer, you need to strengthen your upper body and arms. Now, just start with some movements that target those areas. Start small, and gradually increase your range of movement, weight and intensity. Once you start noticing results, use that feeling of success to keep driving your habits! 💪 Lorrie xoxox Loving the show? Let’s connect!
