522: Lez-ssentials Crush with Kirsten King and Casey Rackham

from Lez Hang Out | A Lesbian Podcast · host Ellie Brigida and Leigh Holmes Foster

Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Kirsten King (@kirstenlking) and Casey Rackham (@caseyrackham), the writers of Crush, the queer teen romantic comedy of our dreams for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This is a very special season finale episode and we are thrilled to be joined by the writers of Crush, which you can find on Hulu and internationally on Disney+. Crush stars Rowan Blanchard, Auli’i Cravalho, and Isabella Ferreira in one of the only fully queer love triangles we have ever seen. It is a breath of fresh air, because instead of focusing on trauma or coming out or having a tragic ending, there is zero homophobia in sight. This is the queer teen romcom that we have always deserved but never gotten and it will have you cheesing from ear to ear the entire time. We talk to Kirsten and Casey about their 4 year long process all the way from the birth of the idea to bringing on the incredible director, producers, and cast to finding a home on Hulu. If you’ve ever wondered what a meeting with Natasha Lyonne would be like, wonder no more, because Kirsten and Casey have the answer for you. We couldn’t talk to the writers of Crush without taking some time to discuss the importance of positive queer representation in media, especially teen and young adult media in the face of so much recent anti-LGBTQ legislation and sentiment. We talk about why the representation provided by Crush is so important and revolutionary and our shared passion for increasing the amount of stories in the world that feature queer joy. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Crush titled “Double You” written by Leigh Holmes Foster, produced by Ellie Brigida, and performed by Ellie Brigida and Leigh Holmes Foster.
