527. Purple Heart Day

August 7 is observed every year as National Purple Heart Day, marking the day in 1782 when General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit. The original badge was a purple cloth heart used during the Revolutionary War. It is the oldest military decoration still given to U.S. service members today. General Douglas MacArthur revived the award in 1932 on Washington's 200th birthday as the modern Purple Heart, which honors the brave U.S. service members who were wounded or killed in combat while serving in the military.
