53 | Food, Feelings & the Gut-Brain Connection with Jaclyn Klauder, RDN, LD, CEDS

from More Than A Number | Lose Weight, High Protein Diet, Low Carb Diet, Meal Prep, Lose Weight Fast · host Sam Barone | RD, Weight Mgmt Specialist, Diet Culture Rebel

Welcome back! What if the way we eat, the way we feel, and the way we think about our bodies aren't separate issues at all? In this episode, I'm joined by my friend and fellow registered dietitian Jaclyn Klauder, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist with expertise in behavioral health nutrition. And this conversation gets into so many of the things I believe we've gotten wrong about health and weight loss. Jaclyn and I talk about what it actually means to be healthy beyond a number on the scale, and why our physical, mental and emotional health are far more interconnected than we sometimes realize. We dive into the difference between disordered eating and a diagnosable eating disorder—and why you absolutely cannot determine someone's relationship with food simply by looking at their body. We also explore the fascinating gut-brain connection, what restrictive eating can do to our gut health, and how food can support both our physical and mental well-being. We also talk about hunger and fullness cues, emotional eating, body neutrality, mindful eating, and Jaclyn's “tool belt” approach to coping. One of my favorite reminders from our conversation? You can always go back to the food. Sometimes simply knowing we're allowed to have something takes away some of its power. And yes, we tackle some of the nutrition nonsense circulating on social media, too. Because apparently even bananas and berries have become controversial. 😂 This is such a rich conversation about learning to work with our bodies rather than constantly fighting against them—and I can't wait for you to hear it.
