Ward graduated with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Louisville in Kentucky in 2014. One year after graduating, she was diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma, mucosal melanoma. In the 8 years since, J.B. has experienced both sides of survivorship, undergoing several differing medical treatments and also engaging in clinical work with children and adults. She currently resides in Nashville, TN, where she enjoys creating art, especially charcoal portraits, and lives with her 9-year-old son, husband, and two dogs.J.B. is actively involved in advocacy work,  including serving as a consumer reviewer for the Department of Defense's (DoD's) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) melanoma research program and serving on the board of the Melanoma Research Alliance's RARE Melanoma Registry.
